... software counterfeiting."

This is the message that appears above a Green Star in my toolbar when I passs the mouse pointer over it. The star has just appeared. The thing is telling my computer (or maybe just telling me) that my copy of Windows is not genuine and has a way for me to "Purchase a Genuine Windows License". As I know this is a genuine software, having bought it new many year ago I tried a safe mode scan and found nothing with Norton.

What might be the issue here ? Is there a Fix or Patch available on Windows Security or Norton's site ? Help, please !

You do update Windows often?
The yellow shield appears 2nd Tuesday of the Month to run the Updates downloads in the back ground (and no message comes up?)

This is because a special marker program has run before to ascertain if the copy of Windows on the Machine is the Genuine article
www.microsoft.com/genuine/ProgramInfo.aspx?displaylang=en&tab=XP
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Genuine_Advantage
To double check if this program called Windows Genuine Advantage is in place Do this...
Open the Windows update page and see if there are any updates for your computer?
Click the Priority button Ignore the other

The Wizard will start if there is anthing there will be 2 notices displayed 1 for the Genuine advantage check then the download will begin

If there is nothing then a message will be shown 3rdly) Dessage Displayed will be a warning message about the Authenticity of the copy of window and of course It will then need a fresh install

And thats going to set you back $ 140- 170

I've just brought an OEM XP Pro disk @$160 But the Full retail price is in the region of $400! Eek

Only difference is you get Some Tech support and a Fancy box Frown

OEM is a copy that the Trade uses and Plain function wrapping (Very green) Smile
Many other Computer Trade related Hardware Items are supplied in this form to So watch out for the OEM tag

Bottom line another issue could be it is still Windows XP1 and running Internet Explorer 6?
If you are on SP2/IE7 then its in the OS otherwise Upgrading these programs is a logical thing to do Smile

Please advise if either of those Program numbers tally

I tried to run Windows Update. First I got an Active-X Windows signed warning... I clicked "Run" as prompted by the site. It went to scan to see if I had software and then gave the following error message :

[Error number: 0x8DDD0004]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. Take the following steps to try solving the problem:
Refresh the page.
In Internet Explorer, delete your Temporary Internet Files by going to the Tools menu and clicking Internet Options.
Close and then re-open Internet Explorer.

I tried to follow those instruction and merely got back to the same exact error page. Since this has started I now I have somehow also locked up Norton and cannot scan. Each time I try to start Norton I get the following error message (and have been unabke to find a solution myself through their site) :

Unspecified error. : res://C:\Program Files\NortonAntiVirus\NAVUIHTM.DLL/navstats.htm:213

Note : I was not able to copy and past the error in the dialogue box... so there might be a spacing or other small error contained in what is typed above. I believe my Norton is 2005 (Not sure as I cannot get it to function).

Anyhow... I am likely just going to limp by until this thing dies, but would appreciate any thoughts, ideas, etc to kick this beast into gear. Thanks. ~Jim

Bit of a head scratcher ,Active X errors

Have you got Spywareblaster installed? That deals with Active X Pests Very effectively Cool

And IE7 does a lot of security blocks too by default.

And MS have changed the rule recently to the installation of this Program (The WGA warning message has been disabled Smile)

I think installing these will either give you some respite or the issue may go? Smile

Ps If you are left with a single recurring message then give Dwight a shout OK?

Thanks Mike. 12 hours of fighting resolved each problem one at a time. FOr some reason the Active X control finally would load only when I opened Internet Explorer and NOT when I used MSN Explorer. All other problems were fixed after several hours of downloading, leaving only one major issue : Spyware.Apropos.C. Norton's security site tells me that to fix that I must be willing to go into the registry and change some values, and that I am not really ready to do. Anyhow, thanks for the help.
