I'm trying to upgrade my Norton's Works. The problem is, I can't find the old disc that was initially installed, which is apparently required to remove all the old software of Nortons. The computer is not allowing me to manually delete all of the files. I'm stuck! How do I get the new software installed?

I just had to restore my system recently and after that my Nortons wouldn't do anything just had a big X on its icon, which then I had to do an uninstall and then search for all of the Nortons folders and delete them, I then did my reg cleaner to make sure all of it was gone. This is very time consuming but the thing is you have to make sure all of Nortons is gone, then reinstall, but if you don't have your CD then you can't do this. Once you start messing with deleting Nortons it will mess it up. I have found that Nortons is really incompatible with alot of programs, there seems to be conflicts with the IE6, which I've had to revert back to IE 5. So be careful with Nortons.

This is a disaster! I have manually deleted all the Nortons files the computer would let me. Some are still on here. I tried the removal tool as suggested. It is looking for a specific file. It can't find it. The only place I can think of is the recycle bin or it was lost or damaged from a recent computer crash.

I'm running XP. I recently had a computer crash and had the computer repaired. Nortons was running, but there were errors with the program after the repair. It wouldn't allow me to uninstall without the disc, which I can't find and am not sure I even have anymore.

It was suggested by the repairman that the crash occured from never turning the computer off causing system errors. There were not any viruses or trojans on the computer at the time of the crash. After the repair, I have noticed a few program files are not running correctly.

I'm afraid that after manual deletion, I have no virus protetion at all now. Please help!!

Let me see if I understand your situation. You're trying to upgrade your Norton System Works. Did you buy a new Norton System Works CD?

If so, is the CD not installing correctly because it sees an earlier version that needs to be removed before installing the new one?

Windows XP has a feature called "System Restore". It won't restore deleted files, but it might reset your registry so that you can install the new version of Norton System Works. Post again if the situation described above is correct. I'll give you the steps to run the "System Restore" option.

If my assumption is wrong, that you haven't purchased a new version of Norton System Works, but rather you wish to download updates to Norton System Works (including Norton Anti-Virus), you can probably purchase a used version of Norton System Works on an auction site like Ebay or Amazon.com for a reduced price.

Ebay lists System Works

Amazon listing for System Works

Note: the two links above may not work correctly. If not, you can just go to http://www.ebay.com
or
http://amazon.com
and type in the search for "Norton System Works" (without quotes).

ivnj posted this link about System Works Perhaps ivnj will post here with his experience with ordering from this vendor.

I hope something here will help!

I overlooked the most obvious method of replacing your lost Norton System Works CD - Symantec, the makers of the product:

Replace lost CD

Someone please pour me a strong drink! I'm frazzled. After driving myself crazy, I finally got Nortons Works installed without the lost CD for my old Nortons to get the old software off.

If anyone has this problem, this is how I found to fix it. At the Symantic site, go to Products and Services. There, you will see a Search to the left, hit it. Type in SYMCLEAN.EXE download. There will be text. Read it. Go down and you will see an icon that downloads SYMCLEAN.EXE. Tell the download to open and run it. I believe you have to reboot, but you will be prompted. All fixed!!!

Now I can stop being so aggrivated with this software. I can't say that I'm too thrilled about how they manufacture this. I would much prefer any software I install to be easily removed at my choice. Unfortunately this sure isn't one of them. Disks do get accidentally broken or lost.

I like the Nortons Works, but I really don't like not being able to easily remove anything I don't desire on my computer. I have spent hours on this. What a waste of time for the customer!!!
