I've got mine set up to automatically do a virus scan & update on a weekly basis along with a clean, repair, and defrag. If your anti-virus files are current, you can probably get away with a monthly scan (always do a weekly update).
Check your software's documentation/help to find out how to do automatic updates - McAfee, Norton, and OnTrack all support this feature.
