We ran a virus check on the computer and we were told that there was a file that was infected. We were also told that the file could not be repaired, quarentined or deleted. The name of the file is Installer_george_test.exe
The location of the file was in the temporarily internet file on a desk top that was only used once to go onto my university web page. What I am wondering is if it is possible that I got the virus from the university web site. Also, is there any way to get rid of it. Right now the computer seems to be working fine, except that I am told that there is a virus on the computer.
If you're using Norton Anti-Virus you can locate the file in "Safe Mode", then right click on it and choose "Scan With Norton Anti-Virus.
If the file is found to be infected, Norton may be able to delete or quarantine the file.
You will not be able to delete the file if it is running. If the Norton says it can't delete or quarantine the file, then it must be running. Can you stop the process in the Task Manager? Press the Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys together and see if you can located and End Task on the process or application.

When we do a search on the computer, we can not find the file. We only are able to find it when we run the norton anti-virus scan. We tried running it also in safe mode, and we were able to locate the virus once again, but only through nortan anti-cirus scan. Even then we were not able to delete it. When I tried going to the task manager, I was told that the only program running was norton anti-virus.
Yes, The computer is windows XP. It is actually not my computer, but my friends computer, and I won't have access to it to test it out for another couple of days.
I think you will have to turn off the RESTORE function if using XP....then look for it.
I had a real stubborn virus reference that I could not find or delete ,eventually had to go to the REGISTRY...FIND and type in the exact name and number of the virus......in my case the number was 14 digits long.....but eventually found it and deleted from the registry...then all ok. Caution Turning off RESTORE in XP will lose all your previous restore points...also backup the registry first before deleting anything in there..after a couple of days of normal behaviour....delete the backup or you might still get a reference to the virus....all of the above is what I had to do.....so is from personal experience and worked for me...proceed with caution if you follow my advice though.
