I have been battling worm issues for a while now and last night (in exchange for a very yummy dinner for my friend and her husband; the IT Director) after trying a number of different things, we ended up doing a FULL FACTORY restore on my PC. Things seemed to be going well, until we ran the MS Update and got the RPC Error message and the system shut down. This is the message one gets from the Blaster Worm.
My question, how is it possible to completely restore the hard drive and end up with the worm AGAIN? We did not do the reinstall of Norton - he thought it best that we do the restore, then update MS and then install Norton. Was this the wrong manner to go about it? Where the heck would the worm come from if we did a full factory restore?????
OMG, Lydia, you need to kick your IT friend. If you have windows XP, NT, or 2k and connect to the web you are vunerable to the virus. As soon as you're on it can hit you UNTIL you get the fix from the windows update page. The factory restore may have gotten rid of the virus, but as soon as you connected it got you again.
If you have WinXP activating the built-in firewall should allow you enough time to get to the microsoft sight so you can download and install the fix.
If you don't have XP then you will need to get some other type of firewall. My reccommendation is to buy a router. They cost about $50 and are the most reliable protection against such attacks that can be bought because they provide a PHYSICAL barrier between you and the internet.
You should kick your IT friend for making you go through all that and then not knowing that you'd get the virus again as soon as you connected to the net.

Do you mean that if, after doing the factory restore, we had activated the firewall, I would have been able to do the update from MS and everything would have been ok?????
Man!!!!! He's in for it now!!! (even if my friend IS married to him!!!) grrrrrrrr
