There is a new build for ad aware ,but my pc tells me that it cannot open the def.ref file. What should I use to open it?

Best way to go about downloading this is to uninstall the old version 1st.
On most computers you can load the newer version will overwrite the older version. But you do get the odd conflict (as in your case) or it's a misload?
Download the program again from
www.lavasoft.de/support/download/
Use either the Download.com or MajorGeeks.com links they are reliable.
It will overwrite the file again and you'll get it working straight away
