I know we get a lot of email queries but have you any tips or hints which you can pass on
also Spam Mad prevention /reduction tips
post them here
To start things

When you get an email with a hyperlink that does not work copy and paste the address into your email as a hyperlink and send it to yourself the hyperlink will now work CoolMake a separate category in your mailbox for these to be stored. if it a link you use often Smile ,I call mine "Log Ons for Sites" by doing this you stop the clock on the server auto deleting your important email under the "housekeeping"
I have my AP contacts email saved like this
can only be deleted manually Wink
Have this running on Yahoo & Aol for over 2 years had no probs with it Cool

Spam reduction: Try not to post your email online. If you do, diguise the address (see my profile for an example of one way to do this). make sure that it is disguised in a way the a human can easily figure out but a computer program (such as the ones that search the internet for addresses to put on spam lists) won't be able to figure out.

Another thing...don't click on Spam message hyperlinks. No matter how tempting it is click the link just to tell them to stop bothering you with their spam mail, all it does is confirm that your address is a valid one. That makes your address more valuable to the "spammer".

And...you know all those forwarded email jokes making the rounds? The ones with 50 or more email addresses in the "To:" line? People that create spam just love to get on those lists because they can "harvest" all the addresses in the "To:" or "Cc:" lines. The address are often valid and therefore valuable. They are gathered together and sold as a database to other spammers.

If you just have to create a massive mail-out of a joke or perpetuate an urban legend*, please put your own address in the "To:" line, then put everyone else's in the "BCC" (Blind Carbon Copy) line. That way, the only address visible on this message that is bound to get forwarded a million times is your own.

Great idea for a thread topic, bedstor and thanks for your post, methos5000.

If you are desparate to eliminate junk mail and only want mail from a specific list, a "whitelist" may be for you. Anyone who sends you mail who is not on a specific list (managed by you) will be deleted. It has been called one of the most "draconian" methods of dealing with junk, but it is very effective.

I've posted instructions on how to set up such a filter on numerous email servcies. (Including AOL & Hotmail):

Great page, JWooden271! I've modified my Outlook Express mail filter with the "Friends" folder. Your method is much simpler that what I was doing.

I also outlined the same prosedure as JW HERE But it's only a trial and does expire eventually as I just realized. It is 35 only so not bad but I'm looking for a free client. Will post soon. Or Lycos has an allow only list also. Or Steven and MailSword as listed HERE are good cuz they ask the sender to verify them selves by replying or typing a four digit code as a robot could not and there fore the sender is not a spammer. But I haven't tried those two yet so I can't verify that but the idea is good at least.

If there 2 email addresses that you should learn and will be invaluable if you are not sure about these "Items of interest" pill pushers, XXX, Male Member enhancers ect . ect. Eek Confused Red Face Frown Mad
They are the "Forward" email for checking
They may be called by Abuse @email.com or Cos@email.com or Spam@email (several dozen variations on titles)
If You do NOT know this. then POST a message on to the Beginners Issues board ASAP and we'll find it for you Smile
The other address is the webmasters address which can be used if the other address cannot be found ,they might send you the correct address for forwarding?
If you get nothing in return or ignorance then consider changing ISPs Frown

If you want to register on one of those "questionable"
sites,
try Mailinator

This will give you an "Instant address" that has absolutly no link to yourself.

Mike, I found this on the E-magazine you mentioned in another post.

Great news for all you AOL users!!! AOL 8.0 Plus and the newly released AOL 9.0 Optimized have nearly eliminated SPAM. I am still testing new Beta changes for 9.0 (have been an AOL Beta tester since version 6.0) and am very heartened to see the progress! Not pushing AOL mind you, just keeping all aware of this major step. Ed, I don't know when the above versions will be available in UK, but I highly recommend them.

Thanks for that Qualserve
They are about to start Beta tests on AOL9 shortly in the UK lets hope it does not become another "bug fix"/patch for AOL 8 Roll Eyes
BTW Is AOL testing it as Codename "Thailand"?Roll Eyes or something completely different in the US?

AOL 9.0 Beta was called Blue Hawaii. JWooden721 also did Beta testing on 9.0 and 9.0 is now released as 9.0 Optimized (Note - requires a MIN of 128mb RAM)
