Maybe its the way you are approaching the Windows Update

Keep online for this...

The scheduling Service needs a "Windows update" program from Windows update .If you see what I mean. This grabs the right updates for your computer (that you need) OK?
I Forget if SP1 had this but Open the Control Panel Locate the Security Center Icon and click it If all is well you will see 3 Green lights here Yellow is Faulty and Red is off and/or Faulty... Firewall should be always Green

The Middle section concerns Automatic Updates
I'm guessing this will be a yellow?

Look underneath and click "Automatic Updates"
Now on Mine its set to "Automatic". Its set to look at the MS site daily at the same Time

Set that up... Next Click on the Turn off Automatic updates
Next click Apply then OK to close the window then reopen it back to the Automatic updates link
This Time look for the Red "shield " with the white cross
click the link to the Windows Update Web site (Or click here) Fingers crossed you will get Updates including the latest Windows update Program? Roll Eyes
If successful return to the Auto updates and return the setting to Automatic...Click "Apply" to Set.Then On "Patch Tuesday"(13th January) you may Note that it will download an update for you?

You could also try updating via the http://download.microsoft.com site. You would need to find Windows XP service pack 3 (contains all previous updates) and download / install it. After this is done, try the Windows update again.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsxp/sp3/default.mspx
This link above is a direct link to SP3 which I hope will work for you.

If it still fails, try to download the Genuine Advantage Validation tool via the same http://download.microsoft.com site.

I hope something here will help.

Have you tried the downloadsite in Safe Mode with netwrking?

That might allowyou toget the updates.

Also, have you tried chkdsk chkdsk and/or System File Check? SFC

Dodge I Just thought on You cannot go from SP1 to SP3 Roll Eyes

You must have SP2 in place first

This is a free download but its Big! 266MB
www.soft32.com/download_992.html (Many places have this)
It has many bug fixes Going to SP3 give you a Big bundle of Fixes from #2 But I think It may bring issues of its own
And I don't think IE 7.0 can run with SP1 Roll Eyes

SP2 in Place does enable you to run many Program
You said yourself you are having Difficulty running the odd Program this is Because it is Optimized for IE7
Looking deeper there are several other "Key" system Programs that also need Updating ASAP

Such as DirectX ,Java,Shockwave, AdobeReader
Leave them Several versions out of Date you Miss out on Many things

Question? Have you Got your XP pro Disk to hand?

If you can Error check the Hard drive and note the Errors(On paper) Somebody will tell you what to do
Maybe you can Just run the Disk and it will overwrite the error?

PS Defragging sometimes shows up a Hard drive error (Something to try) Defragging is fast with XP (And you can work while its running)Smile

hi bedstor
yes i was trying to go from sp1 to sp3.
so i got to get sp2 first ok ill give it a go.

java is always wanting an update but when i go for update it says need sp3 installed.

did the error check and i defrag all the time.

the only reason i was wanting the update was the java keeps bugging me. one time before i have all the updates but my computer started running slower and i noticed that my hard drive was getting full. all this MS stuff.
i really want to change to ubantu but the wify dont like it. i told her you just got to get use to it. thanks bedstor ill try the sp2 update first.

had to come back edit (it was the ms updater that was crashing my computer not the sp3 thing could there be any difference with sp2)

SP2 Will give you the Right installer

I suspect the Version you got wouldn't work with SP1 Hence your Prob?
Do consider deleting Programs (Anything other than Windows XP) to make room. When it gets near full It slows down sharply (Virtual drive space is used up) Keep an Eye on this
I think it will start if your Hard drive is down to 10% free space? Only workaround (and Keep the programs) is to fit a 2nd drive (as Slave) and Link the 2 up? Prices are not too hard on the Pocket (DO Not buy 2nd hand from a stranger) I brought my Western Digital 160GB drive for about $60 from a computer parts company With all my programs loaded I have better than 80% free space (and supplemented by 2GB RAM) Only issue I have is Balancing the Internet files Cache size when viewing YouTube (Do get the odd lockup) Red Face

The link to SP3 that I provided says it includes all earlier updates, so I think it should not be necessary to do SP2 first.

i think im going back to win 2k and try daul boot wth ubantu and get used to ubantu.
if you any ideas why this rig does this please feel free to let me know at this point im up to crashing this rig. ( IM GOOD AT IT ) Big Grin

Last chance saloon time Dodge

I was looking for another Item, for an earlier answer, when something caught my eye

Try this
Open the Control Panel. Locate Administrative Tools
Click on Services ...
Click the Extended View Tab(underneath the Box)
Big List scroll Down Until you see

Security Center click on it
The settings message(to the right for this should read Started and Automatic
If that is not right, look to the information panel (On the Left) and Click the Restart link OK?

Next scroll down to the Item "Task Scheduler" Should also Read Started & Automatic I think this is where your No-go issue is located Roll Eyes May be showing Stopped or Disabled? Again Click the Restart Link TIP If it shows as Started Click the Stop Link then the Restart link .The messages will change!(Try to fool it!) Wink
Last link is to locate Windows Installer
near the bottom of the list
This is Listed as Manual Any other Message is
no good
Only 1 link on this Item and that is Start

Once you find this List the Job to check the settings and do any alterations will take you about a Minute Smile

Next try the Windows Update site again
Use this Link and Click on the "Express" Button
Only Proviso is you must have ActiveX enabled with IE7.0, otherwise you get Nothing.Easy to overlook! Red Face
Any Joy now? Roll Eyes

dodge,

This may seem like a stupid question, but have you scanned for viruses and spyware? Sometimes they will interfere with updates.

Chris ive scanned for both and when i first did this i had a trojan w32 something or other. well i could not get rid of it. so i did a complete reinstall. but the thing is this particular computer has never wanted to get the updates ever. i built this one from all new stuff that i ordered from new egg. its a fast computer just wont take updates and its only when i try and load the updater from Microsoft's site. I did manage to get sp2 downloaded and installed but as soon as i restarted it bam crash. now when i removed sp2 all was better.

Bedstor ill check that too.
i dont know if it has anything to do with but when it crashed last my printer did not work any more (its wireless) had to do a reinstall on that.

Chris (vansrme) Has Got a good Idea there about trojans/Nasties Have you ever heard or made a Hijack This Log? (Tiny Program of 800K)
Pace~Ace has Published One and it shows to an Experienced reader where there Might be an issue.

But We won't do that until other ways have been tried. OK?
Here is the Download link (Save it to Favourites) www.download.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html
There is a Video here too explaining What this Program does

Typical quote from the Feedback
quote:
Pros: It generates a detailed list of suspicious items.

Cons: However, it takes an expert to decide what should be removed. Not for the beginner

For some problems, It has to go to a specialist site with a dedicated Forum Roll Eyes

Can also get the same Program from www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/

I just have been over to the IE 7.0 Download site on another answer. It says this
quote:
Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)
This is the most common version for use with Windows XP Professional Edition SP2 and Windows XP Home Edition SP2.

In the Menu box below there is no mention of SP1 unless you are using a Server

Hope this clarifies matters? The Copy you want is on the First link. NOT the Menu box SP2/SP3 Link OK?

If somebody tried using this with SP1 or SP3 installed, they are looking for trouble! Frown
