If you have a virus (or just want to protect yourself) I highly reccommend these programs:

AVG AntiVirus www.grisoft.com
In a recent experiment this FREE antivirus program performed just as well as the more expensive Norton Antivirus

Norton AntiVirus www.symantec.com
This is probably the most well known antivirus software out there. And it performs quite well too.

Unless they've done something with it, Norton Anti-Virus doesn't work with Windows XP. I'm running XP (Home Edition) and use McAfee VirusScan. It hasn't crashed anything (yet!) in 6 months and I don't think I've caught any viruses. It hasn't told me it's stopped any though.

Norton AntiVirus is WinXP compatible,

It is very important that you keep your anti-virus software updated. I update mine daily. Norton Anti-Virus will automatically update the virus definition files, but you need to manually click the "Live Update" button located in the top left corner of the Norton Anti-Virus program window to get the latest program file updates.

Anybody know anything about PC-Cillin? I'm still somewhat ignorant about the internet and virus stuff. We have Windows XP and PC-Cillin came with the computer.

We just had a real scare regarding the Klez virus. After getting some information from friends, I realized I had opened 2 emails that were Klez viruses. As far as I can tell nothing happened.

We didn't get any messages saying PC-Cillin had stopped it at the time. I recently downloaded all the updates for PC-Cillin and ran it again (it runs all the time I'm on anyway). It says I'm clean - no viruses found.

Does it sound like everything should be OK? Or, am I "blissfully ignorant"?

Any advice is welcome.

The Norton system works pretty good if you ask me. I have used it for 5 years and it has never failed.

From my experience, McAfee misses a lot. I've seen multiple cases where McAfee has been on a machine, fat dumb and happy. Then, Norton is installed and you find out there were a dozen viruses floating around on there that McAfee was oblivious to!

I am running 3 XP, 1 Win98SE, and 2 ME machines. One ME with Norton 2001 and the other with Panda - no problems with either. The 3 XP machines are running: McAfee 6.2, PC Cillin 2002, and Norton 2002. Again no problems. PC Cillin 98 on the Win98 - it sometimes fails to load and requires a reboot. big grin

I have been using PC-cillin for just about a year and have been quite happy. In fact, as soon as I was offered the upgrade for their 2002 version, I went for it.
PC-cillin was recommended to me by someone I have business dealings with in Taiwan (and I am in PA)

I would recomend downloading one of the removal tools rather than the manual reg. edit option.

A friend of mine had McAfee and she got a virus and they wanted to charge her an arm and a leg to remove it. Definately go with Norton. They sell a program that has a firewall as well as the antivirus on it if you don't already have one and it costs about the same as the antivirus alone.

JWooten,

I just downloaded Grisoft. It found the Klez virus on my computer.

Thanks again.

I downloaded the AVG and found no infected files. Thanks so much as it was the first free one that I could get to download right, being such a novice with this.
