Spyware and "Pop ups",2 of the most common probs on the PC red face .Once they are activated they cause no end of misery frown , especially to those of us who do not know who to deal with this "curse" frown
But I might be able to break this vicious Catch22 situation, I have found a program which lets you run most "Popup" infested programs without the deluge of "Popup" Ads, what it does is generate a "Dummy"(blank) file and the spyware part will think it's a genuine file with "0" in it and send that. thus producing "No" Popup by return.
The program is called "SpyBot Search and Destroy v1.1"
the file size is 2463KB and can be downloaded from http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,22262,00.asp
On the same page, there are some more Popup "Stoppers" download links all free except 1 which is a "trial"
Secondly I found this program which lists almost every spyware program generator(over 750! eek (GULP!)) link for download: http://camtech2000.net/Pages/SpyChaser.html
And to remove Spyware try this off the same site: "SpySites" there is a free and a pay version ($19)
http://camtech2000.net/Pages/SpySites_Program.html
I'm feeling generous, smile there are lots more decent looking program download links off this site, mostly Free and Shareware Links menu is at top of page of the above link.
And bookmark this page lots of Security utilities here(mainly free or shareware) smile
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/browse/0,cat,1443,sortIdx,1,00.asp
I have Bookmarked both these sites, they are well worth a return visit. cool

I also am having a lot of pop-ups, so that's why I did it, and also due to my pc trying to be attacked by an outbreak of viruses and trojans, that I happened to get from an email from someone. So what about the warning when you first install, about your host server not liking it? It did slow things down, when I tried to open aol. As a matter of fact it disconnected the first time. How do I resolve it being so slow?

Hi Soaringhorse
I have Aol like yourself, the installation of this program shouldn't cause a disconnect or slowdown.
There are several things you can check and do,nothing too hard ok?
The obvious things that spring to mind are these questions:
Q Is your Aol/IE cache full?
Q Is your cache size set too small?
Q Have you not been deleting "Old" programs?
Q Have you loaded this program without clearing the cookies and Temp files?
Q (and the Biggie!) Have you not done a "Scandisk" and/or a "Defrag" since you got your computer? (or recently?)
Any one or a combination of the above will cause a gradual slowdown or the occasional lockup/No go
frown
If you want to try one of the above things out, but are not sure how to go about it post you computers Operating system details (Win95/98 ect.) plus the size of your Hard drive/memory processor I posted something for somebody a month or 2 back on another thread on how to retrieve these details here iis what I put in it...
quote:

1)Click on the "Start" button and bring up the program list Ok so far?
2)Look in the list for "Accessories" Ok?
3)Click on this...new menu list opens
3a) Look down this list and click "System Tools" next menu list, click "System Information"(nearly there! phew!)
4) A "new" box will open with all the Info(numbers & names)
4a) This is also the access point to a lot of the housekeeping programs on the PC
We often ask for the basic information off this page If we are giving any help out(on the computer section ect) so write it down and/or copy it to this page (we'll help out if you aren't sure what to put down)
Ps With practice you can get to the "System Info" page in under 2 seconds

Bedstor, I think it was just it's initial first time, because it's fine now. But thanks though, I am using an Intel Celeron Processor, Win Me, 633 MHz, 64mb, and I did clean the cache. I like this program, I only see just a couple popups now, which is alot better than it was, Thanks, very much!
