I had a friend do a search on her computer for the *.vir. She came up with alot, over 70. I advised her to delete them. Was I correct. Some of them are saying they're .dll's, but she should still get rid of them. Right? Also if the computer has been reformatted several times, won't all the backup disks be infected too? She has Norton's but I suspect it is corrupted too.

There is nothing wrong with her Norton av - the .vir files prove that !!! Norton Antivirus will rename an infected document to.vir and then put a 'cleaned' document in it's place.

Those files are safe to delete !!!

And also, shouldn't nortons pick up any viruses off of disc thats been used? Shouldn't each disc be scanned when theres that many viruses on the list? I think over 70 is quite alot, don't you?

#1: Is the system running correctly??

#2: What is the EXACT file show - ie: pic.dll.vir or what??

#3: What "disk" are you referring to: the hdd or a floppy or cd??

#4: Is Norton enabled to realtime scan?? (some newer virii disable the scan engine so they won't be detected)

Norton's is working properly, obiously, it picked up several Klez H viruses.

As far as the drivers, I'm not sure since it's my freinds, but all I know is I was getting a lot of disc thrashing when I would open her emails. Now they seem okay though.

The reason I ask about any cd and/or floppies inserted into the pc, is if those were used when the virus was active, shouldn't nortons pick this up, each time?

The program is NAV 2002, can you set that to realtime scan, and if so, how?

Thanks!

Unless the cd or floppy is scanned, Norton would not pick up any virus until it attempted to make its way onto the hdd.

If the Norton av icon is shown in the System tray, then realtime scan is up and running.. If it isnb't there, then Norton would have to be started each time.
