Don
What are you using to mop things up?
and B) Are you still on Dialup?
You should have something that auto detects spyware and deflects it SmileNot you doing the donkey work Red Face
And It is an essential thing getting a firewall in place if you have gone to broadband as insurance from heavy spyware intrusion, and other nasties Mad
And on dialup it can help keep the spyware numbers down Smile
Once set up it works quietly in the background Smile

Yes, I'm still on dial up...
I use Webroot's Spy Sweeper and Zone Alarm...Actually things are starting to calm down... It actually took about 3 sweeps of my Spy Sweeper to wipe everything out...Its possible my Zone Alarm had been deactivated. Why ?? got me !
Geeeeze! Will we ever learn how these things work ?? Beginning to think they have a mind of their own... SCARRRRRY......

Don
I think the best method for you is to turn up the setting on your firewall to Default(Medium) at least ,Sounds to me like Its on
Low or Off Red Face
This will stop the majority of the nasties accessing your computer
Next download and Run Adaware
http://lavasoft.element5.com/support/download/
This will root out those files that are responsible for your Problem and you can delete or isolate them ,repeat the scan Once every 2-3weeks ,and the number of files found will drop sharply.
3rdly To stop any more taking up residence The best 2 Programs are either SpyBOT or SpywareBlaster which acts like an extra Firewall
stopping most of the nasties from taking a grip And you can go onto many sites where These wait like Media sites and Music sites knowing you won't come away with something hidden away Mad
Downloaded and run in the wrong order the menace remains Don Frown
And a clear out of cookies is a good Idea when you do this.
This is where the info is stored to tell the computer toOnly display your personal info all the "Hello how are you?" messages also data to be sent to servers elsewhere This is where the spyware looks first Mad and installs its own cookie to send back info to HQ .Making sure this is difficult to place here Is Spywareblasters speciality Smileand if it does take root the Adaware program will take care of that Smile And on top of that is the Firewall which must be set Only to allow Programs that you trust to access the Web Smile
In fact (harder to do job) turn up the settings to just under maximum and "Allow" Programs (after consideration to access the Web than shut them down (Manually!) A lot of work involved Frown
Afer using this Firewall I have got (Macafee Firewall Plus)for just over 2 months now I conclude that the Medium setting Is Ok for most people.I had a 1000 hits 1st day Frown Now is down to under 40 per day Cool

Additional to the Last Don
SpywareBlaster is Downloaded from www.Javacoolsoftware.com
quote from FAQ
quote:
Developed in 2002 to help users prevent spyware installs, SpywareBlaster pioneered the effective use of prevention techniques to reduce or greatly eliminate spyware-related problems, as well as problems related to other unwanted software such as dialers, browser hijackers, and adware.

Today's SpywareBlaster is greatly enhanced - protection is still the foremost purpose of the program, but it also provides unique utilities like the exclusive "System Snapshot", and various useful tools. The interface has been upgraded to provide easier access to all of the new options, including Restricted Sites Protection, and Mozilla/Firefox Protection.

The System snapshot feature enables you to roll the system back if there is a problem with spyware.XP can also do it with device drivers(if something does go wrong?) But It is a very strong program and I have never had to use this feature.Good insurance though Smile Update every 6 months or so
