A friend has replaced her ageing computer with a new one, running XP Home. She wants to protect it effectively with a firewall, anti-virus etc., but they must be freebies.

I am thinking of recommending Agnitum Outpost for a firewall, AVG for anti-virus, Ad-Aware and Spybot, also Browser Hijack Blaster. Has anyone any other suggestions, and can anyone supply the URLs for downloading? Thank you.

As long as you install Spybot 1.3 and install the tea-timer, you shouldn't need Browser Hijack Blaster

Once upon a time I would have recommended Zone Alarm, but it is so bloated, I wouldn't bother

Have a look at this page which a lot of useful suggestions
