Two months ago, just after having updated my .dat files, I ran my scanner and it detected a newly discovered virus in my system. After I deleted the virus, a message window appeared instructing me to "replace that file".lol I've been baffled ever since then. Can somebody please help me make sense of what that message told me to do?

Do you remember what the file name is? Sometimes a virus will write itself into your registry and after it has been deleted, the computer is still looking for it because it is written there. Post the file that your computer is looking for....

Sometimes a virus will corrupt or replace a Windows system file. In that case, you can replace the file using System File Check program.

If you're using Windows 98 or Win98 SE:
Click:
Start
Run
Type:
sfc
Click: "OK"

Let the program scan your system for missing or corrupt Windows system files. If it doesn't find any, then the file in question probably wasn't a system file. This will not harm your system and may find and repair problems you're not aware of.

If you're using Window ME, there is a process known as "System Restore": (Note: don't bother with this if you aren't having any system error problems).

Click the Start button.
Point to Programs

Point to Accessories

Point to System Tools

Click System Restore
Choose Restore my computer to an earlier time
Click Next

Click a day on the calendar

Click the restore point description

Click Next.

Make sure you have closed all your files and open programs, and then click OK to close the dialog box.
Click Next.

More "Restore" details here

If the "System Restore" function doesn't work, try this site for update information.

Update WinMe Restore

It is possible the file in question is not necessary and your system will not be affected by its absence.

I hope this helps!

P.S. - After posting, I saw the answer posted by cswchan, "Do you remember what the file name is?". I agree it would be a big help if you knew the file name of the file in question...

Dear Dwight and Cswchan,

Thank you for your responses. I looked through a bunch of the viruses in the McAfee library and didn't find the name of the file. But I do remember, the virus I picked up from email the month before said something like, "Hi I thought you'd like to see these pictures..."

When I ran the scan, the same message appeared that time, too. It said to replace the file.

I'll keep looking. In the meantime, if anyone remembers the name of the file carrying that message, would you please post it? Thank you.

This is the Norton Anti-Virus page about this virus.

Part of the instructions are to delete all files associated with this virus, so the file that could not be cleaned and was deleted must not have been an important file.

I hope this helps!
