Hi everyone, I really hope someone can help me out.

I've just bought Norton Anti-Virus 2005. When installing it I am asked, as expected, for a product key.

I can't find it.

The Symantec web support site says it should be on the back of the CD sleeve, there is no paper sleeve, it came just in a DVD case with no book. The manual is Adobe, it mentions nothing about the product key.

I have searched the disk but have found nothing. Has anyone had the same problem?

It's legit copy, purchased new from a high street retailers website.

I'd appreciate any help.

Many thanks

Dinosore,

Welcome to the pool!

I had a mighty struggle with Norton and their Product ID key, too. In my case the product ID was there, but the program would not accept the number. Calling Norton (Symantec) did not help because they would not take my call unless I agreed to pay them for the support. I choose to take the product back to the store and got a full refund.

I suggest you take the product back to the store and ask for a refund on the basis of the fact that it cannot be installed on your system due to the failure of the manufacturer to include the product key.

If the store is hesitant to refund your money, then I suggest you ask them to locate the product key in the software package. If they can locate it, you can accept the product and install it. If they cannot find it, then they should allow you to return the product for a full refund, or at least to exchange it for another product package. I suggest you open the package at the store to confirm the product key number is actually in the package.

By the way, in my opinion (IMO) I do not suggest Norton Anti-Virus or Norton Internet Security to anyone. In my opinion the product is attempting to do too much on your system. If any problems develop, no matter how small, your whole system is affected. I prefer to use smaller applications that do specific tasks;
Examples:

AVG AntiVirus (Free) Free Download

Firewall: ZoneAlarm (Free) Choose Free Zone Alarm

Anti-Spyware: (Free) Remove Spyware

Anti-Spyware (Free) spybots - Search & Destroy

Spyware prevention (after you've removed them first) (Free) Prevention Tool

Learn about downloading and using Spybots and Ad-Aware: (Free) Learn from Ruth

About Spyware (My Site) Also Free My Site

I hope something here will help!

Thanks Dwight, it's pretty much as I thought, I'll take it in but I expect I'll be told to return it as it was an online purchase.

I hoped someone would know where to find the key, I'm starting to think that the guys in the warehouse remove the key from every tenth copy!

I already use a few of the products you mention. AVG, in the past, has not found threats that Nortons has found (I already use the 2003 version). I use both ZA and Adaware as well as others such as Spy Bot.

Thanks for the advice, I'll give it a go.

Dinosore,
You might give Avast a try, I use it extensively, and have found its better than Norton by a long shot! You can find it at:

Its a great program, and finds more than Norton and even AVG, when I had AVG, (sorry Dwight, Smile ), might be worth a look.
