Catty Have you tried CrapCleaner which does clear out a lot of useless stuff off the hard drive and does help speed up defrag times and Processing speeds Very easy to use and safe visit www.ccleaner.com for a copy (free) Only thing it does not do is list the Spyware As you have XP the best cleaner which can be set to run on a schedule is the Microsoft Antispyware program (about 15 mins download on Dial-up) This is updated in the Windows updates every month ( and it is very strong ) I Highly recommend that you install this Also download this Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830) Only 1 MB This keeps the bad virus's at bay Last but not least install Avast Antivirus program Updates daily and is free (Register and you get a code "key" to keep it running for a year) otherwise the updates stop in a few weeks

I agree the Microsoft Antispyware program is a bit fiddly to set up but once it has scanned once and deleted dozens of potential pests it does settle down If it is installed best thing for now is to Right Click on the red Bulleye icon by the clock and click on Run a Spyware Scan and let it run( You can work while its running ) and see how many Items it picks up? On this First scan It will take over an hour (needs to settle in ) then on subsequent scans the times will drop sharply to 30-40 minutes (fewer finds) And don't be alarmed at the findings it does find "false positives" Pieces of code that it thinks? are spyware but are safe. But I find that deleting the "viruses" only corrects the program and there are no issues I've been running this program since before Microsoft Brought the Original Maker (GiantSoftwareCompany) and liked it spread the word.
