Upon loading windows 98, I got a screen saying something like 'morze5.exe has been renamed or is missing..do you want to replace it with the closest similar file xxx.exe? I clicked no, then a bunch of other files appeared that I was asked to replace, and I said no and couldn't get into the system. Then out of frustration I started clicking all overthe place and said "yes", but now I can't even boot at all, I keep getting a 'fatal error" notice. HELP!

I believe that you have a virus on your system. Please download and run HiJackThis. You will need to use another computer to download the HiJackThis, then start your computer in Safe Mode and install the HiJackThis from a floppy disk. HiJackThis download page.

Safe Mode:
Restart your computer. At the very first screen or the "*beep" repeatedly press and release the F8 key. When the Windows Menu appears, select "Safe Mode". OK the Safe Mode dialog explanation box.

If your Operating System is Windows ME or Windows XP, you will need to turn off the System Restore function or your virus will be retained in the back-up files and be restored.

Additional Steps for WinXP machines: turn off "System Restore" before running the HiJackThis cleaning program. More System Restore WinXP details here

Click "Start", select "My Computer" and right-click. From the popup menu, choose "Properties".

The "System Properties" window appears. Select "System Restore" and Check "Turn off System Restore on all drives". Click "OK".

To disable Windows Me System Restore More WinME System Restore Details here
Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
Double-click the System icon.

Note: If the System icon is not visible, click "View all Control Panel options" to display it.

On the Performance tab click File System.

Click the Troubleshooting tab, and then check Disable System Restore as shown in this illustration.

Click OK. Click Yes, when you are prompted to restart Windows.
Follow the instructions in the document that instructed you to disable System Restore (such as troubleshooting or virus removal). When all instructions have been completed, enable System Restore again by following the instructions below.

Run the HiJackThis and the Morze5 will show up and you can check the box in HiJackThis to get rid of the problem.

Remove the files you wish to remove and then restart the computer. It will restart in Normal Mode.

To turn on Windows XP System Restore
Click Start.
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Uncheck the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" check box.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

To enable Windows Me System Restore
Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
Double-click System.
On the Performance tab click File System.
On the Troubleshooting tab, uncheck Disable System Restore.
Click OK. Click Yes, when you are prompted to restart Windows.

You may wish to print out this long reply. I would suggest using the Answerpool "Printer Friendly Format" tool. Click the AnswerPool "Tools" menu, then "Printer Friendly Format".

Finally, you may wish to post your HiJackThis log at the Tom Coyote site linked above and get free expert advice about removing any additional troublesome files from your system.

I hope this helps!
