I downloaded and installed spybot. Everything went fine, except it will not run.
I uninstalled and downloaded again - same thing.
This is the message I get:
Cannot find the file'C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SpybotSD.exe'or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.
A required .DLL file C:\Windows\System\imageHLP.DLL was not found.
What did I do wrong?
And how do I fix it?
Any help will be appreciated. Thank you!

I searched through your previous posts until I found one that said that you're running Windows XP. The following assumes that the machine you're asking about is the Windows XP machine.

The file "imageHLP.DLL" is a Windows system file and should be stored in C:\Windows\System32

You can run the System File Checker tool and it should replace that file.

Click Start
Click Run
Type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK

The system file check utility will run. Hopefully it will find the missing "imageHLP.DLL" file and replace it.

This Microsoft Knowledge Base article explains the System File Check tool in Windows XP: Click Here

Once the missing file is restored, try installing the Spybot program again.

This problem should not have occurred if the "Windows File Protection" service is running. To read more about this, click the "Windows File Protection" link in the Knowledge Base article linked above.

Hi Dwight, thanks for digging so deep to give me an answer. I do have XP but... I have been using my 98 Machine to surf, I have the Xp disconnected till I can figure out why the Windows messenger wants to connect to the internet; different problem. The machines are NOT linked. Sorry for not providing the info up front.
On the 98 machine I tried to install Spybot & Zonealarm because I had no security installed at all.
Don't know where I goofed.
I'll try ad-aware; maybe that'll work.

Well, the procedure to reinstall the imagehlp.dll file is basically the same.

Start/Run/Type
sfc
Click OK

Choose the 2nd option, "extract one file from installation disk..."

Type in imagehlp.dll

Click Start

The "Restore from" can be your Windows CD, or a folder on your hard drive where the Windows .cab files are stored, like C:\windows\options\cabs (see below)

I suggest you use the "Browse" button to navigate to the correct location.

The "Save file in" is:

C:\Windows\System

Then click "OK".

If your .cab files aren't in the C:\windows\options\cabs folder, you can use the Start/Find/Files or Folders tool to locate them. Use the wildcard: *.cab to look for any .cab file.
