2 other things to try other thann defragging

1) Type Cleanmgr in the Start>Run box with XP
or Go to Start>Programs>Accessories>SystemTools>Disk cleanup for the same location
If you are on XP it will do a scan then display a list, otherwise it's almost the same as the other Windows program
When the prompt menu comes up for what files you want to remove, tick the Temp files and look at the bottom of the List for a box called compress old files this has remnants of archived files (again this is on XP only) press Ok to start the delete procedure within a few minutes you'll be able to start working again?
and You'll have 90%+ Winkresources
Method 2 means doing a download.
Visit this link and download EasyCleaner (3rd link down) once you have it installed click on the "Unnecessary Files button on the Control panel(untick the History and Cookies boxes) run the scan and delete what it finds (quite safe Smile) then click the Registry button press Find and anything found will be deletable unless it has a red mark against the name ,then come back here if you have one of these (unlikely!)All these things are entries doing nothing
It will dump all the "deletes" into the recycle bin(and you can restore if something goes wrong afterward (so long as you haven't emptied the Recycle bin! Red Face)
I've been running this for a while and its quite good (only have to defrag every once in a blue moon) Wink
Resources is running between 95-100% with XP Cool Expect 90% with anything else
Ps I even got Catty using this and she often gets into trouble Red Face (She liked it Cool)

Bedstor, I was thinking the same thing, EasyCleaner is a good one! I just am leary of messing with the duplicate ones, that's where I draw the line, it confuses me which ones are safe to delete. I was surprised at how much showed up in the unneccessary files, I use this program alot as a regular maintenance. Thanks for showing me this one. Smile
Roogulator, you really should try this one, when you get the results, the ones with green on them are safe to remove.

Another way to clean your temp files is:

When you have your Internet Explorer open, look at the top.

Choose Tools->Internet Options->and on your General Tab, there will boxes to Delete files, and Clear History. You can click each one of these, and click OK.

If you really want to make sure the temp files are cleaned: Click->Settings(that's the box next to the delete files box)-> View Files. This will show all your cookies and temp files. Select from the top again, Edit->Select All. Then when all are hightlighted, move your mouse over the highlighted ones and right click and delete. It will ask you to confirm, yes. That clears them out, and you can do this whenever you feel like it, more practice makes perfect. Hope this helps. Wink

Easy cleaner has been of great help. I still have only about 50% free space on my hard drive though.
I really messed up months ago by down-loading anthing and everything, mostly audio and video files. I have deleted many but obviously I need to burn some off and free up even more space.
Bye the way , of the several helpful programs I have learned of through this thread, and reading a couple of others, should I be just opening them or down-loading them to program files like I have been doing?
I thank again all of you for your input and ongoing interest.

You said it...It's the Hard drive contents Red Face
Can't tell you what to delete
Download Belarc Advisor
www.belarc.com/free_download.html
Run the Scan
Copy and Paste the Software versions section in here(Bottom of the Page)
We Might be able to spot something that can be removed?
I suspect you have either a bloated program such as ICQ or something Like Gator or its spin offs which is trouble (maybe able to swap it for something that does the same job with No grief/bloat?) Wink

I agree it is information overload for most surfersConfused

1 item could go, and that is the SurferNETWORK Player.I checked on it and its a possible spyware attractor . I also see you have SpywareBlaster that will keep it in check SmileUpdate this every other week..

As you are running XP there is a Folder where you can do a safe Delete (spyware sometimes lodges here too) and it's passed over Confused in Housekeeping (defragging)
It acts as a Cookie type cache to speed up program loads but it can act as a buffer too and slow things down Confused
Lets delete this too and see what Happens? Wink
Very simple Click Start> in the run box type Prefetch
In the Window that opens delete everything bar any configuration file might showing (they have a brown cog)
And Like the cookies they regenerate when you use the programs again bar any spyware Wink
And if the computer crashes afterwards ( very unlikely)restore them from the Recycle Bin..If all is well then delete Wink

If you are using Broadband to connect? I saw you had some Logitech software. If that is so, block both the Logitech messenger and Backweb programs with your Firewall. I had grief with the Latter pestering me with popups (and bypassing SpywareBlaster. Mad )
Backweb is used for the update to the Logitech software My rule open it(firewall) grab the update, then close it. Smile

I ran prefetch,OMG, what a lot of files. Only one with a brown cog, deleted it.
I have a Logitech keyboard which may account for that showing. I defrag regularly as well use speed disc. We shall see what happens now.
Most of my still existing problems are intermittent. Slow downloads, freezing and crashes. Thank you bedstor!
