I have a pest called Webrebates AKA Toprebates which I am trying to clear just now
When I ran the scan I was expecting just to see that on the list but it came up with a list of 117 pests (spyware,trojans,malware...)including the Pest above.
Most are blocked by SpywareBlaster, though why they are not rejected puzzles me

I have PestPatrol Corporate Edition along with AdAware and SpyBot that I run once a week.... The first time I installed and ran PestPatrol - about 3 months ago - it found 314 Adware, Spyware, Trojans & the like.... I would suggest that if you can get your hands on this prog, is to install it & run it.

But then I do have KaZaa and Morpheus ( I knew they have spy-ware) They have a couple of the cookies that are listed as part of the 67.

The rest are tame, tracking cookies.

I am also a virus Nazi, run scans every day, attack, destroy, kill - LOL

The short answer is no
Job 1 is download and run Adaware this will selectively weed out and remove those cookies that cause grief
You need a spyware barrier in place to stop these returning. Something like Spybot or SpywareBlaster Smile Also a firewall is good insurance, there are some free on the Web,and they'll give you some protection against these Smile

I was down to 2 and I went in and got rid of those so I should be down to zero (for the next 60 seconds). Roll Eyes

I suspect these little pests latch on everytime we pull up sites on the internet. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them even come in through AP. We have been house-hunting on the internet and I think that a lot come in through the real estate sites.

Funny some company can install ad generating software onto my machine, use another virus like program to track where I go on the net in order to tailor a targeted series of specific ads. This is legal and ok.

But I can't go to my neighbor's car, install a camera and monitoring hardware to track where he goes so I can target my conversations to meet his needs. I can't go into his house time and time and time again to hawk wares at him. That would be considered harassment.

I can't even do that when he parks the car on my property, let alone go to his house and start tinkering with his car.

Why is that?

80 tracking cookies, but i havent ran adaware in a couple of weeks.
like david, i want to know how it is legal that the companies that put these in my computer can come into my house uninvited and store things in my computer without my permission.
if I did that to a neighbours computer, i would be charged with break and enter, tresspassing, and who knows what else.

I'd like to hear how you people define "tracking cookie".

Cookies are not pieces of software. They are simply packets of data, stored locally on your computer. Websites that you visit, which already have software to communicate/read that cookie are the trouble. Who do you blame there? You, for visiting that site, or the cookie.. for being there? (Which, again.. you'd have to have visited an offending site to have gotten the cookie set initially.)

Don't misconstrue, I'm not condoning the practice. People, however, have this impression that all cookies are bad. A lot of the cookies you might consider "good", are actually tracking cookies as well. For example, when you click "Remember me at answerpool.com", when you login, it sets a cookie.

how do i end up with 70-80 tracking cookies a week on my computer when i only visit 6 sites? ever?
if you want to know, they are answerpool, dp, herport, hotmail, diabloii.net, and battle.net.

i find it hard to believe that those 6 sites are responsible for all the cookies that ad aware finds that say 'tracking cookie' after them. not once has adaware notified me about the cookies for saving my info on those 6 sites.
im just curious where they come from.

now on the OTHER comptuer, thats another story. that one is for surfing, browsing, poking around, and its loaded with tracking cookies. Wink

But it DOES show a registry key for BonziBuddy that I can't find w/ Regedit, hmmmmmmm...

Decal, I found Bonzi Buddy too, as well as Ad Aware. I did go into my regedit and deleted them though, but be very careful to delete the right path. That one on Adaware came back after the first scan, I had to literally delete the value, which I then uninstalled Adaware, I'm not happy about Adaware at this point. Now all I see when I run pest patrol is cookies.

Dwight, how do you keep up a good maintenance on yours? I have Spybot S&D and Spyware Blaster. Any others that you would suggest? I also have ZA.

This PestPatrol is a good site, have definitely saved to my favorites! Smile

I would have downloaded Pest Patrol, but they want payment for it, and I dont have it, LOL. I'm happy with Ad Aware SE , and Spybot, though Spybot says it now deletes tracking cookies, my version never finds them, and its version 1.3. Ad Aware SE finds them, and I can get rid of them. Of course, I also run Cookiewall, which helps keep them off, as well as delete them at the end of the day when I'm powering down. Cookiewall can be found at www.analogx.com .
