We have norton anti virus, and norton firewall on our computer and neither of them are enabled. We tried clicking the enable botton and nothing happens. We also tried deleting the programs and then reinstalling them, but the problem is still there. How do I enable them?

click Start | Run.
type in msconfig and then click OK.
When the System Configuration Utility appears, click the Startup tab.
Look for the entry for ccApp.
If you see an entry, make sure that it is checked.
Click Apply, and then OK.
When you are prompted to restart the system, click Yes.

If it is not there, then it may be a case of uninstalling it using the removal tool

Which versions of the Norton are using and which operating system?

There was no option ccApp. Should I try uninstalling it and installing it again? It's Norton antivirus- 2002 and the computer is windows XP.

Were both installed as part of System Works or Norton Internet Security?

There are several viruses that disable the Anti-Virus programs. I would suggest you try running an online anti-virus scan to determine if your system is infected.

http://pcpitstop.com/antivirus/default.asp

http://www.symantec.com/nav/nav_9xnt/ (Click the Security Check link).

http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp?cid=9435 (McAfee Anti-Virus online scanner).

If you're unable to get any of these to run, please let us know. Also, if you're running Windows XP Service Pack 2 you will need to "OK" the ActiveX download for these online scanners to work.

And, as putasolutions asked, please let us know if this was installed as part of Norton System Works or Norton Internet Security.

It was instaled as part of norton system works. There were three CD's. Norton System works, Norton Anti Virus, and Norton Personal firewall.

The second Link you gave me dwight didn't work. I'm trying the first one now.

It won't harm in checking for viruses, but the fact that the firewall is down suggests a problem with Norton (actually Norton Anti virus, isn't that an oxymoron? Wink)

My mother thinks it's a virus that attacks norton because we have had this type CD for a couple of years (with regular updates and everything though) and this is the first time we've had a problem with Norton itself.

This, btw, is how to manually remove Norton from your system

It is unlikely that it would attack the firewall as well though

OKay I do have a virus on my comp. I finished the virus scan and it told me
Our scan of 4793 files found these viruses:
The W32/Bagle.CA.worm Virus was found in file C:\WINDOWS\system32\winshost.exe
The W32/Bagle.CA.worm Virus was found in file C:\WINDOWS\system32\wiwshost.exe

and my anti virus isn't working so I don't know how to delete the virus.

Fortunately, its not a virus, but a worm, bad enough,I know, but not the thing that has disabled your NSW

I ran the program and what I got was as follows.

Memory modules scan started
C:\\WINDOWS\system32\wiwshost.exe infected:Win32.Bagel.BJ@mm
C:\\WINDOWS\system32\wiwshost.exe unable to clean
pid #1C4(Explorer.EXE) killed
Memory modules scan done
Startup executed files scan started
Startup executed files scan done
Services' files scan started
Services' files scan done

Does this mean that the virus is gone?

No unfortunately not, one has been eliminated

Download and run removal tool and run it.

well, I figured out that I didn't press the scan button, so I pressed it, and it found the virus in numerous places and then deleted it. It then told me to turn off my computer and run the scan again, which is what I am doing now. so far, it hasn't found any traces of the virus (fingers crossed)

Weeee! thanks a bunch puta, I used the removal tool, and it says that the virus is now gone. I'm scanning now with the pcpitstop to see if it picks up any other virus stuff that the removal tool didn't.

Though the original problem is still on my comp, the firewall won't turn on, grrr. Nor will norton anti virus. Do you think that now that I have gotten rid of the virus that was on my comp, to try again to uninstall and install norton anti virus?

you should remove norton as stated above with the removal procedure and then get a better one.
avast is pretty good. any way after you completly remove norton do a online scan again. then reinstalll your choice of anti virus.
wtg about getting that worm gone.

Leppi,
Considering Norton is basically a pain in the rear to operate when its being stubborn, I'd get rid of it completely, then install Avast! ( as Dodge said), and maybe Sygate firewall, or Zone Alarm. Both have free versions. Norton is a total waste of money, to me anyway. Good luck!

Well, we've already had norton for a while and it's worked fine for us (and we already payed for it). I've had also in the past zone alarm and Mcafee and I didn't like either of those. I'll look into avast though.

Unfortunately, Norton 2002 is past its day, and you may notice from their support site, their support for it is becoming more limited.

If you are still paying your subscription on it, carry on until it runs out, then install one of the free AVs and firewalls.

All of the ones mentioned have can compete on equal terms with the big boys at the incredibly nice price of nothing!

Did you remove the System Restore and then reset it after restarting your computer? If not, the infected files may reside there waiting to reinfect your system should the restore option be used.

Also, Windows XP has a "Prefetch" folder that sometimes retains copies of infected files. I believe it is a good idea to delete the contents of the folder. Windows will rebuild the folder upon restart.

We once had problems with system restore on a different computer. We don't have norton System restore on our computer anywhere. Also, where is the prefetch file?

Click Start | Programs | Accessories | Windows Explorer
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check the Turn off System Restore[/b] or Turn off System Restore on all drives check box (if you have more than one partition)

Click Applyb

this will delete all existing restore points. Click Yes to do this.
Click OK.
Restart the computer and follow the instructions above, but uncheck the Turn off System Restore or Turn off System Restore on all drives check box (if you have more than one partition)

The antivirus scan would have shown the viruses in the prefetch if they had been there

Thank you for putting in the remove "Restore Point" directions, putasolutions. Something came up while I was writing the reply message and I had to "hurry" it up.

Actually, I have seen several instances of Anti-Virus programs failing to remove "startup commands" in the "prefetch" folder. These commands are to previously infected program files which have been removed, so they aren't really infected, just useless junk. So I have been deleting the folder's contents routinely when a system has been infected. However, if you are not having any problems, you could just ignore this step.

Some background...

"The Prefetch folder is used by Windows XP to speed the boot process. Windows XP records information about each program that launches at boot and uses that information to boot faster the next time. Because multiple files might have the same name, it appends a "hash" of the file's location. That's the odd string of numbers and letters between the filename and the .pf extension.

This folder may accumulate useless junk, especially if you change your configuration a lot. There's no harm in emptying it. Simply delete all the files in that folder; Windows will rebuild it as needed." PCMag

The normal location for the folder is:
c:\windows\prefetch\
