I saw a topic on this list sometime ago where somebody had loaded lots of different anti-spyware programs and observed that their machine had slowed down (and defragging was doing no good Frown)
Only today I came up with the reason why this was happening.
This is my theory...
All the spyware,Adaware type programs were conflicting together negating the benefit of removing the spyware but imposing a "Brake" effect on the Ram Confused
The only way to get out of this paradox is to uninstall all the spyware detection programs,
then reload only the Adaware scan/removal,and Spyblaster programs, they are both single use only programs and they do not interfere with normal running,
I avoid those that run constantly in the background ,when running in multiple they cause the "brake effect" on your computers speed Frown and your CPU resources percentages will drop
Below 70% on XP and 50% on other OSs warrants attention Frown otherwise you'll be seeing crashes if they are less than that Roll Eyes

My defrag went up to 60% and no farther. I took off all of what you suggested and tried defragging. It went to 11% and stopped. I put spyware blaster and adaware back on and defrag still stops at 11%. Any suggestions?

I think you have something running in the background such as a screensaver these sould be turned off while defrgging ,also moving the mouse causes a restart or touching a key Red Face
Leave it alone while its defragging give it maybe 2 hours it should be nearly completed by then if the Percentage originally got to 60% and it restarted when you touched the mouse or keyboard thats Ok
The critical number to get past is 10% to 15%
keep moving things at this stage and Defragging will never get done OK? Red Face
See if you can get the defrag display up and you can see the data "blocks" being moved around? and tidied up
Better than that tiny text box
When its finished you can reinstall the Adaware & Spyblaster programs
Try running this tiny program before you defrag again?
it'll get rid of dead end links and make some room Smile

Hi ferang,
"You can also run your computer in safe mode by pressing and holding F8 while your computer is booting and then selecting Safe Mode with the up and down arrow keys keys on your keyboard then pressing the enter key. Running your computer in safe mode will only load those files necessary to run windows...."
Then run ScanDisk (now called error checking in Windows XP)then Defrag.
Disk Cleanup, Scandisk And Defrag in Windows XP
Running Scandisk in Win ME
Running defrag in Win ME
Running Scandisk and Defrag in Win 98
bedstor is spot on about leaving Defrag it to do it`s thing, one time I got it up to 50%, sneezed and it restarted!!! Big Grin Wink

When I defrag I am nowhere near the pc. I leave it alone to do its business. Today it went to 11% and restarted for an hour. I got mad and did what Redder said to do in safe. It took over an hour but did finish. I did some snooping and found a bunch of porn downloading on Kazaa. Kazaa has now gone the way of the DooDoo birdf. I expect that was slowing up the defrag.
Tks to you and Redder.
