If your antivirus identifies the virus by name, there is no need to report it. If, however, the antivirus reports "virus-like activity" by an unknown program, or running an email's attachment or simply viewing the email causes pathological behavior, then the program, attachment, or email can be submitted to the antivirus program's author. Symantec's Norton Antivirus allows you to "quarantine" suspicious programs and send them to Symantec Security Response (previously called SARC). See their target="Submit Virus Samples Page" regarding manual submissions, or items to which quarantine does not apply (like boot viruses). Other major antivirus publishers should have similar submission procedures in place.
