Just got a message:

"Norton has detected a virus on your computer. Its name is "JS(or perhaps 5).fortnight.c. Unable to repair this file."

How can I get rid of this thing? Do I have to do a complete search and find? Why can't Norton delete this?

I had a couple of trojan viruses that Norton could not delete or quarantine. I was at my wits end.

Then one day I realized then I ran AntiVirus and at the end it listed the virus, the name is actually a link to the Norton site with information on how to get rid of the virus yourself.

Hopefully, yours will be the same way.

Usually the reason Norton can't delete a virus is because the file is running. Often, if you restart the computer in Safe Mode, then run the Norton AntiVirus it can remove the infected file.

However, as LaPisLaZuLi noted, you can get more detailed information by going to the Symantec site.

Safe Mode

1. Restart the computer

2. At the first screen, or "beep", repeatedly press and release the F8 key.

3. At the Windows Start Menu, use the arrow keys to scroll to Safe Mode

4. When Safe Mode is selected, press the Enter key

5. Choose a login with Administrative rights

6. "OK" the Safe Mode explanatory dialog box

When removing a virus, it is usually necessary to turn off the "System Restore" feature. Right click on "My Computer" and choose "Properties". Click the System Restore tab and check the box to disable System Restore. Once the virus is removed and you're back in Normal Mode, I suggest you go back and remove the check to re-enable the System Restore.

When you've completed the Norton scan and are ready to quit Safe Mode, just restart the computer. It will restart in Normal Mode.

Just a shot but you could do a search for *.vir and see if it is listed. Did you go to Symantec's site yet? I do recall a virus named that a long time ago that nortons found but it quarantined it. Did you look in your reports (activity log) in Nortons to see what it says? It should give you the name of it. Also, when I get alerted to a virus, sometimes it will say the same thing "unable to repair", and then it ask "Do you want to delete this file?" And I click yes. But there should still be a note in your activity list. Here is the symantec's description of the virus:

Soaring, is that what I'm supposed to do - quarantine them? What does "quarantine" mean, anyway?

Dwight, I followed your instructions but soon came upon a freezeup. It said reinstall Norton, so I did, and that seems to have fixed it.

Yes you can quarantine it, but I always delete them afterwards. Quarantine keeps it from invading your pc, I believe, its kind of like the virus is in jail, haha. You can go your reports and there should quarantined items you can check out, then you have the option to delete the item. I think also Nortons makes a backup of them, that's why I wanted you to do the search for *.vir, that's what it will be saved under. Then if you find that one you can delete it too.
Great to hear you got it resolved, everytime I mess with my system restore like that my nortons gets messed up, and I have to also uninstall and then install again, it can be a big pain, lol. It takes three times to update viruses when you are first installing nortons, and you have to reboot each time.
