The other day the door to the CD-ROM in my tower started opening and closing on it's own, fairly rapidly. I ran my XoftSpy and found that the file scanregw.exe had been overwritten by a worm or trojan or something, and the CD-ROM door thing is one of the symptoms of this. I had to delete the file.

Anyway, scanreg.exe is used in Windows 98/ME to scan and backup the registry on startup. I need this file and can't seem to find a place where it can be downloaded.

What I got with my computer is a "Recovery Disc" and I thought I could extract the file from it, but there is nothing on it but two .bin files.

I'd really hate to reinstall windows over this as my computer is, apart from this virus thing, really running well right now.

Any help appreciated! Confused

Thanks Chris - that was really thoughtful! Unfortunately I already had scanreg.exe.

I must admit I am thoroughly confused. The file that was deleted was scanregw.exe. I looked it up on a couple virus info type sites, which say it is a necessary file.

But I searched my .cab files for it and found nothing. Wouldnt it be in there if it was installed with windows?

Anyway I have used Registry First Aid for a couple years, now when I go to back up the registry before running it, I get this message:

File does not exist: scanregw.exe/comment=Reg1Aid_backup

Problem solved! You learn something new every day, especially if you don't know much to start with. In start/run/msconfig there is an option to "extract file"!

Thank you Google.
