Bedstor, I downloaded this software and it scanned my files ok. Came up with quite a few "suspicious" files. How do I know which ones to delete? Where does it say it's an ad?

Catty (who is thankful for help) confused confused confused

Catty, many "suspicious" programs will likely be launched at startup. You can selectively disable them under the Startup tab of MSConfig. It is hazardous to delete them wholesale.

A good deal of information is available from Pacman's Portal.

...TomGL2 is right about arbitrarily deleting things if you don't know what they are.

The files my AdAware usually finds contain some form of the following:

servedby, doubleclick, gator, hotbar, colonize, fastclick, bonzi. Most of the "other" items are scripts from websites.

There have been others but I don't remember what they were; I haven't had any problems deleting any of these. Most of the others I found were either "scripts" from websites or non-essential, ad-generating files from downloaded or installed software (for example: I downloaded a free game with Gator software embedded in it; I deleted the Gator and it had no effect on the game).

I did an AdAware scan, just now. It came up with 1 "doubleclick" cookie and 1 "other" in Temporary Internet Files. I right-clicked on each, then selected Show Properties...: the first was just a cookie, the other was a script file, probably from some site my roommate visited last night.

I do an AdAware scan everytime I signon (after my roommate's been surfing) and always find 1 or 2 new files. I simply select them, then get rid of them.

You could post the names of the files you're unsure of (you're safe to delete any of the ones I mentioned before, at the beginning) and I might recognize them (or see if I can find out what/who they are). The first time I ran AdAware, it found 50 or so "suspicious files". None of them, it turns out, were part of the OS; they were all unnecessary parts of other programs I either installed or downloaded, or cookies from websites.

The first time I ran AdAware, I checked out each one I didn't know about. Once I figured out none of them were "good" files, I deleted them. Now I use Cookie Wall, which you can get HERE, and POW, which you can get HERE. Cookie Wall lets you select which cookies to always allow (like AnswerPool), temporarily accept, or always delete (like doubleclick). POW will kill, also selectively, any pop-ups and pop-unders you don't want.

Now, the only time AdAware finds anything, is after my roommate's been surfing (he won't use AdAware, Cookie Wall, or POW - he doesn't understand the need for Internet Security. He thinks hackers & spyware are myths).

Let me know if you need more help.

Sonnet, you are so helpful, I will try to post them here. Give me a little time as I am fairly busy napping today.
