Hi! Ok...I had Norton Internet Security Professional 2003, but, it got uninstalled, and I had to reinstall it. After I got it installed again, I got this box that is titled "Windows Registry Checker" and it says, "Windows encountered an error accessing the registry. Windows will repair the registry for you and restart the computer." Then, it gives you only one choice on what to do - click "Ok". What does this mean, and what's going to happen if I do click "OK"? I just had to bring my computer in to get it fixed, and I don't want to have to do that again... Please help asap. Thank you!

The Windows Registry Checker is an automatic tool that checks your system registry at startup for errors. When it detects errors, it will run (when OKed) and correct them.
Hi! Thank you for replying. I am still not sure if it was okay to click "OK" on the Windows Registry Checker, but, I did. My Norton Internet Security Professional 2003 is not downloading right. It was bought and installed from the internet (not my idea), and it just will not do right. I can download it, and it says that there are files missing, or maybe some other weird messages, and tells me to uninstall and reinstall. It is very difficult to do that. It won't uninstall as easily as it should. I don't know if the guy that worked on the computer messed-up something, or what. Let me tell you about that: The Internet Explorer decided to not work. I tried downloading it with the disk, but, that didn't work. So, I had no choice but to bring it in. That guy that worked on the computer said that there were files missing on the antivirus program, so he used a program to completely delete it. All he was supposed to do was fix the Internet Explorer (without that, we basically had no internet), so...Does the antivirus program missing files have anything to do with the internet not working? I do know that the antivirus program was disabled before I brought the computer in. I don't know how that happened. So, can someone tell me if the guy who fixed the computer did right or wrong? I know he did one thing wrong...he deleted the Verizon part of my Verizon Online DSL with MSN 8. Why? I have no idea. My troubles right now seem to be with the antivirus program not downloading right. Actually, I can't even get it uninstalled...I don't think. When I go to install it again, it brings up a message that says, "Some files may harm your computer...etc..." It shouldn't say that. Can someone please help me? Please? Thank you!

Hi Trinity, If you have gone into the add/remove programs on control panel and it has given you that message, that probably means you have already tryed uninstalling Norton's so the next step is to do a manual search for Nortons, NAV, and Symatec, and delete those completely off. Then reboot, it would be a good idea to get a reg cleaner, to completely clean your system. That way you can start a new install of Nortons, which I hope you still have the program for. The install process is long and tedious, because when you go to live update it will make you reboot after the download, and then it takes three more times for it all to be fully installed, each time with a reboot. Nortons is really a touchy program, it has a lot of quirks about it, so keep that in mind in the future, when trying to remove it.

Yes, it was OK to click the OK button. The Registry had to be repaired.
A malfunctioning AntiVirus program can affect many things on the computer, so yes, it could have affected the operation of Internet Explorer.
The Symantec site (makers of Norton) has several articles in the Knowledge Base about uninstalling Norton Internet Security and they also offer an uninstaller program (Rnis.exe removal tool).
Click here to go to the Symantec site and read these articles.

There is NOTHING simple with Norton/Symantec!! Should be able to use the Add/Remove programs, but ya can't!! There are so many files and registry entries left you have to go through ALL the Norton fixes to remove it!! That is not what I call a user friendly program, and why Norton will NEVER be on one of my computers or one of my clients! I know your opinion differs, Dwight, but for the average user, Norton/Symantec can be a nightmare to work with, and Trinity's experience is another good example.

Thank you to everyone who replied. Dwight, the link you gave was very helpful, and I appreciate it. However, none of the removal steps worked. Qualserve, I fully agree. It actually was not my idea to get this Norton thing. I give up. Does anyone know of a good antivirus program I can download that isn't a bunch of trouble, protects against viruses and attackers, and doesn't cost much? If you know of one that would also work with MSN...that'd be great! I have never been able to use MSN, because the Norton firewall prevented it. I now have Norton off my computer...how do I know that? I know that because I am able to use MSN. However, I have dsl...so I'm wide open to attackers right now. If you know of an antivirus that'd work for me, I'd appreciate it. Also, does anyone know of a thing that, again, is not difficult, that will scan for viruses and fix them if there are any? Symantec suggested www.sarc.com ...but, I don't really want to trust Symantec on anything. Thank you!

Trinity, I have used AVG 6.0 Free edition for over a year. It updates regularly and doesn't bog down your system. Find it here: http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php
I also recommend Spywareblaster to prevent those nasy cookies, pesky dialers and sneaky Registry implants. Free (of course) and found here: http://www.wilderssecurity.net/
Have fun! And NEVER pay for what you can get for free!!
Ooooops, didn't refresh, so missed Tom's post!

Thank you for your replies. What you two have suggested...They are completely free forever or a limited time? They can trick you on "free" things. Also, will your suggestions work with my system? I have Windows ME, IE 6.0, and Verizon Online DSL with MSN. You know my luck with firewalls and antivirus things lately...I just want to be sure and careful. Thank you!

All three of those items are presently free and have been for many moons. Not to say they will stay free forever, however. No tricks here that I know of. All should run fine on your ME machine. As always, do a system restore point before installing new programs -JUST IN CASE!

Hi! Thank you, qualserve, for your reply. I decided to download Zone Alarm. It seems to be okay. It doesn't interfere with my MSN, either. Now, does anyone know of a good (preferably free) virus scanner that I can download to scan for viruses...that will work with Zone Alarm, my internet, and my system? Thank you!
