My brother is using a P4 with WIN ME, IE6 and a 56k dial up. He has AVG and AdAware and Spybot and they are all coming up clear. Problem is his computer has suddenly started disconnecting and trying to reconnect and failing. It will do this many times before giving up and letting him connect again for another 30 seconds/10 minutes/ hour! I suggested to him that he get the Hijack this download but he can't stay connected long enough to do it. Does anyone know what's going on? If anyone has an idea, then I will pass it on to him by phone. Thanks for your help

Hi Firecow
Thats a good idea suggesting the HijackThis Program to solve this issue
Only thing this site has No HijackThis Log examiners Frown
If you can get your brother to make a log off line if he can get the program downloaded? save the log to floppy, log on with another computer and go to this forum where It will be dealt with promptly (have to register to post) and read the next to next to top item (locked posting) for all the instructions about this program. They'll tell you which boxes to tick Don't be tempted to try it yourself unless you know a lot about fixing Crashes(Experts area!!)
Here is the direct download address... www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip (207k)

While you are on the Phone tell him to look in Internet Explorer (Connections Tab) and check if the "always dial my default connection" setting is selected also is there anything other than his Normal Connection showing in the box above? Rogue Dialler programs are a real spyware threat Frown If one of these has taken up residence, then the only removal method is with the HijackThis Program Smile
The best program for prevention of these installing (in the first place)is Spywareblaster run this after you get the all clear plus the Crap Cleaner program (www.ccleaner.com) to tidy up your hard drive and registry (really good) Cool

Personally it sounds more like a problem with the ISP software. I had this problem once with AOL and only uninstalling and reinstalling the software helped.

Thankyou both for your ideas. Problem solved. Turns out he had a Kevlar? Kevlir? virus through MSN Messenger. He's up and surfing and happy again!

Nice to hear that Smile
Give him this address www.avast.com which is a free and quite good antivirus program Smile
Have to register for a key for a full years updates which arrive every other day, otherwise it times out after 60 days
Once the year is up you re-sign for a "new"key
And it does look after mailboxes Wink
