ok, i admit it, i used to have kazaa.
i downloaded commercials and music that is unavailable to buy.
a couple of times i did download mainstream music that was mislabled, but when i found that out, deleted it.

i removed kazaa about a month ago, everything to do with it that i could find.

the last couple of weeks, i have been finding music on my computer. according to the date on them, they have been put there in within the last 2 weeks. i found one today (n-sync, which i would rather eat my ears than listen to) that was last altered today about 10 minutes ago. (im assuming thats when it was downloaded).
WHERE THE HECK ARE THESE SONGS COMING FROM? and how do i stop them from getting on my computer?

hi mattlynda,
Do you have a firewall? If so, and you had , in the past, given the Kazaa program permission to access the internet, someone else on Kazaa could be planting music on your computer due to your firewall allowing access to and from Kazaa. I would check the "programs" section of that firewall to see if it is still in there, if it is , you should be able to remove it. This is just a guess, I'm sure there are other things to check as well, this is all I can think of right off the top of my head. Good luck!

yes, we have a firewall.

so.... something thats supposed to be protecting me from hackers could end up getting me sued by the music industry?
nice.

and one thing, how do i check the programs area of my firewall, and how the heck do i find out what my firewall is? ( i know we have one cause the computer guy said he gave us one, and our router should have one right in it too)

As vansrme said, "Do you have a firewall? If so, and you [emphasis mine] had, in the past, given the Kazaa program permission to access the internet...

This could only be happening if you allowed Kazaa access to the Internet. I would imagine that you did, because if you hadn't, you would not have been able to download music.

As to how you can change your permissions, that depends on what firewall program (software) or hardware (for example, router) you're using.

For software firewalls, you can look in the Control Panel / Add-Remove Programs and see if you see a program listed that indicates that it is a firewall. One very popular one is "ZoneAlarm". And both Norton and McAfee make firewall software.

Here are some other possible software firewalls:

Sygate
Black Ice Defender
Norton Internet Security 2001 FE
Ontrack System Suite 4 "Net Defense"
SystemSuite 4.0 Firewall
McAfee Personal Firewall

There are others as well.

Hardware:

Black Box LAN-Safe Firewall Details
Netgear FVS318 has a built in firewall Details
LinkSYS BEFSR11 (router) Details

There are others, as well.

I hope something here helps!

ok!
matt just told me that we dont have a firewall.
we did have one when we first got the computer, but he said he disabled it because it gets in the way of playing dibalo2 online.

how do i find out if we actually have one running??

edit: i looked in add/remove and didnt see anything that said its a firewall, but there are a few things in there that i dont know what they are so i might have overlooked it.

Well, you're going to have to look at what programs you have installed. And, as mentioned, the firewall could be "hardware", like a router.

Can you list the programs in your Add-Remove Programs list?

I don't see a firewall in the list. If you add one, that should prevent any more mysterious downloads. You can get ZoneAlarm for non-commercial home use for free at http://www.zonelabs.com
