When I signed on I got the message from Norton that: BMU UPdate was trying to access the Internet.
Specifically:
Program: C:\WINDOWS\System32\BMUUpdate.exe
Protocol:TCP(outbound)
Remote Address: 65.214.151:http(80)
Local Address: All local network adapters 4262

Trusted company EchoBahn
There was more - none of it made a lot of sense to me. How does one deal with this?
I blocked it - but I am not sure what I blocked.
Can anyone enlighten me? Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!
Another recent incident:
I clicked a reminder to register my scanner software - I was not connected at the time(dial-up) - and it initiated the connection. That's when I got the warning.
I'm confused.
Is there a place where you can go to look up things like BMU or EchoBahn?
Thanks! MKS

EchoBahn no longer exists, so the Bookmark Express service BMUpdate.exe provides is unavailable. Good thing, too, as this was a combination adware and trojan. Just delete the BMupdate.exe file.

TomGL2 already answered your question about "EchoBahn", so I'll focus on how you can search for this kind of information.

You could use any search engine, but I would recommend: http://www.google.com

When the page opens, put in your search term, in this case: EchoBahn

(1) You can add more than 1 term, but in this case, just the single name will *suffice.

(2) When the results are shown, go to the "Search within results" link at the bottom of the search results page.

(3) Click it and add the term "spyware" (without quotes), then click the "Search within results" button.

(4) Click the first return result link, in this case: "Adware, Spyware and Advertising Trojans - Info & Removal"

(5) When that page opens, click the "Edit" menu, then the "Find on this page" command.

(6) Type in "EchoBahn" (without quotes).

(7) You'll find this result:
"EchoBahn.com BookmarkExpress (BMupdate.exe) - A program bundled with scanner drivers (!?) that allows you (and marketing partners(!)) to manage your bookmarks from anywhere, and pops up ads at you. The service itself has since been discontinued, and it is recommended to delete this file."
*This search was quite easy, mainly because the primary search term (EchoBahn) was quite unique. In many searches, you will need to use multiple searches, adding more terms with the "Search within results" link.

Of course, putting your search term in here at AnswerPool, in the form of a question, will also work. Don't hesitate to just ask here because, after all, that is why we're here!

I hope this helps!

Wow, thank you TomGL2 and Dwight for the information!
That explains too how this thing got onto my machine.
I didn't realize I could look on Google.
Just didn't make the connection.
Thanks again! MKS

Sorry, not quite through with this yet.
That is an *.exe application = does not delete.
Now how do I get rid of it?
I contacted Scansoft user forum - Don't know how much help that will be.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you. MKS

I'm sorry, I don't follow the "*.exe application =cannot delete".

Do you mean you get an information dialog box saying the .exe file cannot be deleted? If that is the case, it is most likely because the program is running, and you can't delete a running program. Close the program, then delete it.

If you mean you see an information dialog box warning you that the "*.exe" file is a program file, you can just acknowledge the warning and continue to delete the file.

You can use the Task Manager to close the *.exe file, if you like. Press the Ctrl + Alt + Delete key together. Select the application and then click the "End Task" button. If you see a second prompt, click the "End Task" option again.

Another way to do this is to start the computer in Safe Mode, then delete the file.

Restart the computer
At the first screen (or the *P.O.S.T. beep). repeatedly press the F8 key.
At the Windows Start menu, choose the Safe Mode option (scroll using the arrow key - when Safe Mode is highlighted, press the "Enter" key).

When finished with the removal, restart the computer and it will restart in Normal Mode.

I hope this helps!

I got rid of it.
I used "Find" and tried to delete it there. It would not delete. I thought it was because it is an application and not just a file.
I renamed it and then "Find" could not "Find" it.
I found it in WinExplorer and deleted it.
Good riddance!

Thank you Dwight for the thorough information.
I did not know to shut it down in Task Manager.
Next time I'll know.
