Hello! Can anyone tell me where I can find a free virus scanner to download?

An online scan is only good AFTER you have been infected.. It doesn't do what an av program is supposed to do.. stop the infection to begin with !!

Can one use that free program if 2 computers are routered together? The page says:

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition CAN NOT BE INSTALLED ON SERVERS FOR ANY REASON. IT CAN NOT BE INSTALLED IN ANY NETWORKED ENVIRONMENT!

You can't install it on a server.. however, you can install it on both systems and get your protection !!

BTW, being on a router isn't the same as being on a server !!

Murray, that AVG program you suggested...Is it completely trustworthy? Is it completely free? Why does it ask for a phone number? I don't see why they'd need it.

AVG works very well, unless you have multiple virus scanners installed. Always remove all antivirus programs before installing another.

Phone number and other information is strictly optional. Only your first name, last name, and e-mail address are required.

Trend Micro's HouseCall is indeed free, as mentioned here. Similar services are available from Symantec, McAfee, and Panda Software (and probably others).

felicity, that site that I mentioned scans your computer online - for problems. It's 100% free.

Although, as Murray mentions this is not a virus "protection" program - but it will tell you what it detects. I think it's worth checking out.

When you go to the link I gave you, look in the frame on the left side for "AVG Free Edition".. It is completely free..

As I said earlier, online scanners such as Trend HouseCalls or those available from Symantec, etc are "reactions" scanners .. good ONLY AFTER you have been infected and, in most cases, the damage has already been done..

TomGL2, you said that the phone number was optional. It isn't on that AVG program. I tried leaving it blank. It wouldn't do it.

I downloaded the lastest version of AVG last night, and entered only first and last name, e-mail address, and country.

Felicity, When I downloaded AVG I just put in 000-000-0000 in the phone number list. If it insist on an address then you can be creative, like nowhere st, somewhere land, etc. If it wasn't free, they would ask for a credit card, I believe.
