Can you recommend a good basic mans-evolution-from-ape-ancestors book or two for a six-year-old who recently asked "how did the first people get here?"?

Thanks in advance.

Are you familiar with this ? I just ran across this, and although it's not a book, it looks good to me.

I think the kid might prefer something with more pictures, focusing more on the ape lineage than on everything. At least for now. But it's pretty cool!

LIFE ON EARTH - sounds like it has lots of pictures, and is aimed at the right age range.

The book NNN found was my first choice too. It's produced in the style of the very popular Dorling Kindersley books; a white background with very clear eye catching pictures set on top. This is one you could look at with the child, but which he/she would also be inclined pick up and look at alone, because it's not too heavy with text: Life on Earth: The Story of Evolution

But if you just want the story of man's evolution, have a look at this one:
The Human Body: How We Evolved . I wish I could find something a bit newer than this, and I'll keep looking. I think I still like the Life on Earth book best, though.
