The oldest human remains are, oddly enough, in South America - and date to 15,000 years ago. Skeletal remains suggest these people were of South Pacific origin. http://www.cabrillo.cc.ca.us/~crsmith/pedrafurada.htmlhttp://pa.essortment.com/whowerethefir_reof.htmCampfire remain show a date of 50,000 years, but of course this evidence is less compelling than human bones. But the finds that humans reached Australia almost 50,000 years ago suggest that the Pacific may have been peopled by some amazing navigators and sailors. American anthropologists refuse to accept the firepit data (related to the 50,000 year date). South American and European anthropologists do accept it. Time will tell.
