Joe Niekro passed away today of cancer related to brain tumors; Rest in Peace, Joe! +++++++++++++ 10-28-06, 05:51 PM BobLaz Yes, Sail--always liked the Niekro brothers--may he rest in peace..
10-29-06, 12:15 AM DorianGreyed I liked them, too. It always hits home when the athletes you followed when you were young die. A part of you ages.
10-29-06, 07:39 PM Jelp01 I remember the 1987 World Series when he got in an inning of mopup work for the Twins. I was glad to see at least one Niekro get to play in a Series.
Rest in peace, Joe.
10-30-06, 01:57 PM Koz Joe Niekro was one of the most fan friendly players of his (or anyone’s) day. He seldom turned down an autograph request in person, and never through the mail. He was a very good ball player and also a very good man from what I have heard of him.
I did not know he was suffering from cancer, as he was just in Cooperstown a few weeks ago and looked fine.
Rest in peace Joe Niekro.

Very refreshing to hear--especially during these modern days of inflated sports egos...

That is what I read Yank. He was very boisterous, happy, and joking around a lot when I saw him a few weeks ago. He was participating in the Hall of Fame Fantasy Camp, helping his brother Phil out. I watched him toss that knuckleball and that thing still fluttered all over. Maybe someday I will be able to participate, but this year I was happy to sit in the stands and watch.
My thoughts go out to his family.
11-03-06, 04:03 PM AndrBarron I had the honor of meeting Joe Niekro in 86. Actually, my entire bio class met him. We all rocked our finals and were given a treat - The locker room tour right before warm-ups. Pretty cool guy. He signed everything we handed him.
