I just recently came back to the sports forum after a LONG absence. I was going to post something about...you guessed it...the Yankees , but my old thread "All Things Yankee" is mysteriously gone. What happened to it?

Due to overage costs charged by the server, many old threads that have not had a great deal of recent activity are usually deleted, along with threads that are no longer current. (Do we really need to keep a thread about the 2002 All Star game?) I have tried to save threads that I felt were really important, but I am certain that some will feel I deleted a favorite of theirs. Feel free to start another.

The thread was a long-running one with (I believe) at least 60-70 replies, but if those who have used this forum during my absence had no interest in keeping it going, there is no point in my starting another one. At least my old Yankees trivia threads remain.

You may want to save that on your own computer, because the time may come that it will go, too. As AnswerPool gets larger, the need for more room becomes necessary. At the present time, the expenses are far more than anticipated, and deleting threads and posts is the only available option to keeping AnswerPool afloat. Currently we are at about 4000 posts a month, a 33% increase over just a few months ago.

I don't want to pry into your affairs, but I am curious what the costs are to run this site. I do not plan to do anything like this myself; it is just curiosity. Can you tell me how the fee structure is set up? I'm also curious about bandwidth charges as it relates to posting images that are stored on other servers.

Okay, will do...and I'll look over the Computer forum, too, for any extremely informative answers from a certain someone named Dwight that I'd like to save for future reference.
I'm glad your site is growing in activity, DG. How do you feel about asking the enthusiasts to voluntarily contribute (maybe at quarterly intervals)? I don't use this site often, but I'd be willing to contribute just to ensure the site remains for the times I need computer help.

First of all, do not worry about the computer section. That will stay almost in toto, as will the recipe section.* Those two, along with Trivia, I feel are what will attract new people. The more interesting and useful the rest of the site is will determine just how long they stay. Sports and current events are the most likely to be pruned after some time has passed, and other topical threads, such as TV shows, upcoming concerts, and the like.
KK can answer questions about more technical aspect of the server fees. All I can tell you is that we are charged for overages on almost everything. I do not feel comfortable discussing how much it cost to operate at this level of activity. However, it is a great deal more than I anticipated. I do accept, and welcome donations. (I'll take donations in any currency except Iraqi. ) Quite frankly, I need them. There is a PayPal link at the top left of this page. (There is also listed (somewhere) a Post Office box. DO NOT USE THE PO BOX! I had to let that lapse. When I can afford it, I will post that information here and other places on the site.) Donations can also be sent via regular mail. E-mail me at DorianGreyed at AnswerPool.com for my home address.
*Some of these threads may be pruned internally, that is, unecessary posts within the thread may be deleted, but the questions and information will remain. I also may change some titles to better reflect the subject matter. This will allow people to find what they need more easily.

By the way, it is our site. I honestly feel that KK saved us from oblivion when the good part of Jeeves went south, and Karrow made sure that the site was managed properly. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. But it is the combined contributions of not only that first group of pilgrims looking for a home, but also those who joined later that have made this site what it is.

Links to images on other sites don't use much bandwidth, it's the images actually posted here on AnswerPool, even though stored on other servers, that do. This is the reason we have a rule about the size of image allowed, and also why we don't allow animated avatars and images. The size of some of the animated avatars and icons is an incredible number of bytes!
I can confirm that since we got busier, which of course is what we all wanted, the overage charges have gone up alarmingly. If Dg was 60 or 70 years younger I would suggest he sold his body, but alas.......
