I would love to have an authentic Baklava Recipe. I can only find cheap knock-off recipes. Can anyone help? Confused

Smile Thanks Sher, gave me an excuse to call my sister Big Grin

AUTHENTIC BAKLAVA

1 lb unsalted (sweet) butter, melted (It has to be real butter)
1 lb phyllo dough sheets
1-1/2 lb chopped blanched almonds
1 pound chopped walnuts
2/3 cup granulated sugar
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground allspice

Thaw the phyllo before starting. Melt the butter.
Grind or chop together the walnuts and almonds, and mix together with the cinnamon, allspice and sugar.

Brush a 9x13 pan with the melted butter. Separate a sheet of the thawed phyllo. Handling it as little as possible, lay a sheet in the bottom of the pan. Brush it with butter. Fold it over if necessary to fit in the pan. Do this until you have about 10 layers. Then put a layer of the nuts and spices mixture on top of the sheets, cover with a other sheet, paint that with butter, and continue in this manner until you've used all of your filling.

Top with about another 10 sheeps of phyllo, again, brushing each sheet with butter.

Cut across the top of the completed baklava with a sharp knife, into triangles or diamonds.

Bake at 350 for 1 hour, or until evenly browned on top.

Pour the cooled syrup (recipe below) over it and let it sit before serving.

Syrup

2 cups honey
2 cups water
2 cups sugar
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon grated orange peel
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Combine all ingredients and simmer for 10 minutes. Strain. Set aside to cool.

My sister makes this for Christmas every year and sends it to all of us...Very good. Cool
