What is the biggest and smallest country in the world? Would the answer have been different 100 years ago?

The largest country in the world is Russia, with an area of 17 075 200 km2, which equals 3.35% of the total area of the world. The smallest country in the world is Vatican City, which covers only 44 hectares, or 0.44 km2.

The above may be somewhat controversial in that the Vatican is not considered a country by some people. There is some debate that SMoM (The Sovereign Military Order of Malta) may be the smallest country since the Vatican doesn't issue currency.


I am unable to find information from a century ago.
