What are the unusual circumstances of convicted felon Boss Tweed's extradition from Spain ?
(Tweed literallty ran New York City politics in the 1860s and 70s, and defrauded the city out of anywhere from $30 million to $110 million.) ++++++++++ 07-31-03, 12:30 AM Sherasi I am not sure if this is right, but there were no extradition treaties in place at that time for the U.S..... they must have been developed policies because of this person.
07-31-03, 02:05 AM DorianGreyed I have read nothing when researching this answer to be able to provide links that indicated that what you say is true. In facts, several sources, almost all used the word "extradicted" when describing the incident. I will, however, try to find out when the US started extradition with Spain.
07-31-03, 02:21 AM DorianGreyed John Jay negotiated a Treaty with Britian in 1796 that included Extradition as one of it points. I still haven't found out when the US made a treaty with Spain concerning extradition, but I suspect is was well before Tweed's problems.
I have since found Extradition Treatys both with Bavaria and Austria in the 1850s. Since Tweed was extradited in the late 1870s, it seem likely that the US has a Treaty in place with Spain. Moreover, many European countries merely extraditied foreign nationals upon request, regardless of the presence or lack of any treaty.
07-31-03, 06:40 AM FizzyChip Is it that he was identified in Spain from a cartoon drawn by Thomas Nast?
Essentially, you are right, Fiz, but it is HOW he was recognized, and why he was extradited so quickly that is the story. The story most often told is that the Spanish police, not speaking or reading English, looked at Nast's drawing, and assumed he had kidnapped the two children !
09-06-03, 08:23 PM XFED Greyed, I have no idea how they got him back, but in NYC we spell $30-110M snatched UNDERACHIEVER!
09-07-03, 12:44 AM DorianGreyed Not in the 1870s. And some figured that the total haul from the city was as much as $220 million. The Brooklyn Bridge, opened in 1883, cost about $15 million. Tweed was a crook of as large a magnitude as anyone ever, with the possible exception of a few in the last few decades.
