Genghis Khan felt that his only worthy opponent was Jalal ad-Din of Khwarizm, who was the heir to Shah Muhammad.

When the Mongol invasion came, the Shah fled. Jalal went south into Afghanistan and gathered troops. When Genghis sent an expedition after Jalal, Jalal turned and ambushed his pursuers, defeating them. Genghis took charge of the operation, pinning Jalal against the Indus River in what is now Pakistan. Jalal repeatedly led charges against the Mongols, but was unable to break free. Finally Jalal leaped into the river and swam away. Genghis would not let his archers shoot, remarking "Such a son must a father have!" - from National Geographic, Dec. 1996
