I was always under the impression that the surrender took place at the Appomattox Court House, not a private house. Confused

It was definitely at a private residence. Below is from a government site.

McLean is an unincorporated community located in Fairfax County, Virginia. Recognized by the United States Census Bureau as a Census Designated Place (CDP), the community had a total population of 38,929 as of the 2000 census.

McLean was founded in 1910, when the communities of Lewinsville and Langley merged. The town is named after John Roll McLean, the publisher and owner of The Washington Post.
