Very good Kewl! And because of the stamp's color and the denomination of one penny it was actually called "Penny Black".

Technically, IS black a color? I always thought it was the absence of color (at least that's what I seem to remember from school - that and how damn cute Judy Bell was.)

methos
Black, white, and color....

Black is the absence of light (in the extreme case, anyway. In reality it's just very little light).

White is a roughly equal mix of all colors of (visible) light.

If you mix 'all' colors of light together you get white light, but if you mix 'all' colors of ink together, you get black.

Why?

Ink works by absorbing light. Ink looks one color because it reflects that color and absorbs its complimentary color. If you mix 'all' colors of ink together, all colors are absorbed and you are left with black.
