What 3 women have been represented on United States Currency? ++++++++ 06-25-03, 11:09 PM DorianGreyed Sher, if you mean US coins, then the number is 5 (or 4, depending on how you count). If you mean circulating non-commerative coins, there have been 2. If, however, you take the broader definition of currency, there has also been a woman on US currency note, thus adding one to the above totals. Then there is the question of whether you are referring to real people, or a female representation of a concept.
06-25-03, 11:15 PM Patricia Martha Washingon, Pocahontas and the ubiquitous Lady Liberty.
06-25-03, 11:18 PM Sherasi Pat, Lady Liberty wasn't a real person... can you name the third woman?
Dorian... can you name all of those women? (My source only listed 3 women)
06-25-03, 11:26 PM DorianGreyed My source is the US Mint and the Dept. of Engraving. Let some others guess. By the way, Pocahontas is not one of the women. She is unlikey to be until DIsney contributes a lot more money.
06-25-03, 11:35 PM Sherasi ok.. heres the dope I've uncovered so far....
Sacagewea and Susan B. Anthony are the only women honored on a circulating coin. Both were honored on a dollar coin.
Circulating Coins:
Sacagewea on the dollar coin: 1999-Present Susan B. Anthony on the dollar coin: 1979-1981
more data coming.......
06-25-03, 11:38 PM Sherasi Martha Washington's portrait appears on the 1886 $1 Silver Certificate....
06-25-03, 11:39 PM DorianGreyed Sher, what was your original source ? And I am now assuming that you mean coins only, not paper currency.
06-25-03, 11:42 PM Patricia Sherasi I am stumped. I can only find the three I listed. DG Pocahontas is in the engraving of "Introduction of the Old World to the New World" which is featured on several series of currency.
06-25-03, 11:43 PM Kelleygirl 5
Susn B. Anthony -- dollar coin Sacagewea -- dollar coin and on commemorative coins -- Queen Isabella Eunice Kennedy Shriver Virginia Dare
06-25-03, 11:43 PM Sherasi It was a trivia site... misread the name listed by Patricia (Pocahontas, etc)
06-25-03, 11:47 PM Patricia My bad, I was thinking paper currency, not coinage.
06-25-03, 11:54 PM DorianGreyed A Trivia site is worse than a Trivia book for wrong answers. Sher, notice that the mint mentions Dare's mother, and stated that she is on a coin, but somehow does not count her. (???)
Patricia, I am unaware of what currency Pocahontas is on. She is not mentioned by the US Mint or the Dept. of Engraving, at least I couldn't find her name there. Can you tell me more?
Pocahontas appeared as part of a historical scene. I haven't found any image of that yet. So far, all I have found is below, from Wikipedia.
1865: A national bank note with "The Battle of Lexington" and "Columbia Leading a Procession" on either side of the face and obligation text conspicuously in the middle. The reverse features "The Baptism of Pocahontas" in black, and a green border.

The US Mint still can't count. -------- Women on the Nation's Coins
With regard to the total number of real women ever portrayed on U.S. coins, our records show the following:
Circulating Coins:
* Sacagewea on the dollar coin: 1999-Present * Susan B. Anthony on the dollar coin: 1979-1981
Commemorative Coins:
* Queen Isabella of Spain on the Columbian Exposition Quarter Dollar: 1893 * Eunice Kennedy Shriver Silver Dollar: 1995 * Virginia Dare, with her mother Eleonor Dare, on the Roanoke Island, North Carolina Half Dollar: 1937
(Virginia Dare is mentioned by name on page 6 the Annual Report of the Director of the Mint for FY 1937. Other publications, such as R.S. Yeoman's "Guide Book of United States Coins," and Q. David Bowers' "Commemorative Coins of the United States: A Complete Encyclopedia," have identified her mother as Eleonor Dare.) Although it could be argued that the mother and daughter images on the Roanoke coin don't fall into the classical "portrait" category, all available evidence indicates that the image was meant to represent real people.
Therefore, four real women have been portrayed on U.S. coins in the history of the U.S. Mint. -------- Let's count:
1. Sacagewea on the dollar coin: 1999-Present 2. Susan B. Anthony on the dollar coin: 1979-1981 3. Queen Isabella of Spain on the Columbian Exposition Quarter Dollar: 1893 4. Eunice Kennedy Shriver Silver Dollar: 1995 5 & 6. Virginia Dare, with her mother Eleonor Dare, on the Roanoke Island, North Carolina Half Dollar: 1937
Does it worry anyone else that the US Mint can't count to 6?
