Fatalities have been a part of aviation since its earliest days.
In fact, the first person to die in an aviation accident was a passenger flying with Orville Wright.
Lt. Thomas E. Selfridge died Sept. 17, 1908, at Fort Meyer, Va., as Orville demonstrated the Wright's airplane for the U.S. Army. Orville was severely injured in the accident.
