Was it the Gruman TBM3E Avenger?
Chief torpedo-bomber of the Pacific War in 1942-45.

The U.S. Navy's demands for Grumman production of the F6F Hellcat fighter led to manufacture of the Avenger being taken over by Eastern Aircraft Division of General Motors - the GM-produced aircraft being designated the "TBM".

Grumman’s facility in Bethpage Long Island could not keep up with production demands of the TBF Avenger. Any plane designated “TBF” was made on Long Island by Grumman. Same plane, different manufacturer.

A side note: the U.S.Navy first contracted for The TBF Avenger in 1940. Its first public showing was on December 7, 1941 at a Grumman "Open House". In light of events in the Pacific that day the aircraft was subsequently named the "Avenger".
