Hi bedstor,
I'm thinking that the Icknield Way fits this description. But that's just a guess.
The Icknield Way runs through the part of the Chiltern Hills where I am from in the UK.

Nothing to do with Roman roads or Turnpikes or even old pack trails

The name I want starts from about the 1840's onwards OK

as I've been away I have a sort of a clue but it needs a bit of searching Ok?

Leigh Lancashire is the Largest town in England without one Thanks to a certain somebody in the 60's
Though I have not checked old records to confirm ,the "road" never existed at this location
If you are looking for it on a map it is the adjoining town to Wigan to the Southeast look for the large "lakes"(I live to the west of Wigan)

How about Station Road ? In early days the stations disappeared as the railway companies foundered and in the 1960s we had Doctor Beeching who closed stations at a great rate Smile

Fred has it Station Road Is The answer

Future Historians will be scratching their heads wondering why this Name Pops up all over the Place.and in lesser numbers Railway Road /Street

Footnote about Leigh many people who live there commute on the Bus into Wigan (for shopping and work) and they are Jam Packed
Yet
Nobody in power thought about the consequences
of this closure and it was closed on some bodies theory who never visited the town
Frown yet...They closed the station and used the trackbed for a ring road ...they promise a good bus service yet here we are in 2007 Bus service has been cut back simplifed and the only decent work is outside town and they expect everyone to have access to a car or Taxi

and This year some bod "suggested thet make a new branch line and Station...If I remember the costing it will cost abot the same permile of single track as for Half a Mie of Motorway (plus the associated development costs so,They say the want to site it in the Middlw of towm with a connectin to Ormskirk anothe 4mile distant thats 5 mile so we are looking a 5 to 7 million Pounds cost before a train rolls down the track problem 2) who is going to use it? and 3 where will it terminate
Would have been easier to mothball the old line and reopen it at least that would have solved a lot of the logistic problems Yet they ripped it up without thinking of this Future asset Mad PS They call the strip Railway Road
Cheek! Frown

And for the Record Richard Beeching was not a Railway man He came from ICI

ICI had nothing to do with Trains It Makes chemicals www.ici.com/aboutus

And there is lots of articles about Beeching yet somehow it was pushed through with little public inquiry All people knew was a poster stuck on the local station wall announcing withdrawal of services and closure and NO Appeals procedure Frown
In fact there was a 2nd Phrase of closures which did not go through yet the Government only realised what had happened too late and shelved that (I think it came about the time of a General Election?)
Some info about Beeching and his legacy to UK history
