What Civil War general graduated last in his class of 59 cadets in 1846 at West Point? (I probably shouldn't be too hard on the man; after all, he did graduate.) +++++++++++ 07-20-03, 08:56 PM Sailracer General (and later Governor), George Stoneman
07-20-03, 09:00 PM DorianGreyed That is not who I have. Please name your source. You may be right.
07-20-03, 09:16 PM Kelleygirl Tricky question, Dorian, considering McClellon and Jackson graduated that year also. But the one that graduated in the last slot was George Edward Pickett.
07-20-03, 09:17 PM Sailracer Shame on me, DG! I did not read the entire source; you are probably looking for his classmate, Gen. George Pickett;
07-20-03, 09:49 PM DorianGreyed Pickett is the one my sources say. Pickett secured his place in Civil War history as the leader of the disastrous Pickett's Charge on Cemetery Ridge at Gettysburg in 1863. Of the 15,000 Confederate soldiers who charged the Union Line, 6,000 were killed. While my few sources vary on both the size and number killed of Pickett's forces, they all agrede that is was a disaster. I read this too quickly and rushed to judgement; Stoneman ( was as even this source mentioned, 33rd in his class) but since he looked like such a poor choice, I did not read the whole article, nor other articles which clearly shows the correct answer; Hence, the danger of sloppy reseach!!! (plus, as a Governor of California, I assumed the worst!)
