Near the end of World War II, why did the BBC ask people to send in their holiday photographs and postcards in what was, in fact, a fake competition?

Correct, if surprising. What was military reconnaissance for? Smile In fact the military realised that their reconnaissance was nowhere near detailed enough. To plan a landing they needed to know every detail they could get, right down to the position of beach-huts.The Germans had the same idea. They had agents and sympathisers take holiday snaps as well as gather all they could of postcard views.
