... an event marked a major step in a man-made process that some believe is the most important phase in the history of life since the end of the cretaceous period 65 million years ago.

What was the event?

Would the administration of the first smallpox vaccination by Edward Jenner in 1796 warrant such lofty acclaim?

George says naaah. And George also said
quote:
Jerry, just remember, it's not a lie if you believe it.

Here are some other trivial facts about today's date -- May 14th -- in history:
  • In 1607 Jamestown is founded -- the first permanent British settlement of North America.
  • In 1948 Ben-Gurion pronounces the declaration of the establishment of the State of Israel.
  • In 1643 four-year-old Louis XIV becomes King of France upon the death of his father
  • In 1804 Lewis and Clark set out from St. Louis for the Pacific Coast

But you called it "a major step in a man-made process", which sounds technological rather than political. There's also:
  • 1908: The first passenger flight in an airplane
  • 1853: Gail Borden patents her process for condensed milk
Admirable steps, but somehow fall short of being the top event in the past 1012 years. Eek

How about self-awareness, walking upright, making tools, learning to build fires, inventing the wheel -- and purchasing Geico Insurance online. Smile I'm pretty sure those all happened on a May 14. Roll Eyes

If it's not the 1969 birth of Danny Wood, of New Kids on the Block fame, then I am truly stumped.

Well the Perf got it, he will soon piece it together. It's totally bizarre, but scientifically correct. 'Course I won't tell him which point to work on. Do I have to do everything myself? Cool

First, in my earlier post I meant to say ...108 years (and that's stretching it!) Red Face One of those senior moments
quote:

Not soon enough, I guess. Smile From among all the events mentioned so far, I would nominate 'fuse's smallpox vaccine as the most important step in altering mankind's destiny.

Is it related to air travel and globalism? Confused

Since you said "Cretaceous Period" and gave the hint "ecology", I'm going to guess that the first oil well in Pennsylvania struck oil.

No, sorry, not oil. Frown Hint #2: Perf's 'Jamestown' fact was getting very close.

After 1492, the world's ecosystems collided and mixed as European vessels carried thousands of species to new homes across the oceans. The Columbian exchange, as Crosby called it, is why there are tomatoes in Italy, oranges in Florida, chocolates in Switzerland, and hot peppers in Thailand. It is arguably the most important event in the history of life since the death of the dinosaurs.

Excellent, excellent, Moze!!! It was a tough one.

From the May National Geographic:

"For English America, Jamestown was the opening salvo in the Columbian Exchange. ... it began 400 years ago ... on May 14th, 1607, when 104 colonists disembarked on Jamestown peninsula..." By 1624 at least 6,000 colonists had arrived. Most of them died.

The article goes on to describe how the almost exponentially-growing demand for tobacco caused the native corn crops to be displaced and the forest to be cleared. The colonists brought in goats, cattle, horses, pigs and honeybees; some of the latter two immediately went 'wild' and soon there were wild apple and peach trees and a proliferation of insect-pollinated native species. English settlers brought in malaria, in their blood, from the marshes of south-eastern England, and local mosquitoes picked up the plasmodium parasite and spread it to everyone -- English and native alike. But it was the beginning of the near-extinction of native peoples, too, by disease, while the imported humans spread because they had better resistance to their familiar diseases.

And as Mozart has said, species traveled to the old world, too. This transfer of species 'reknit the torn seams of Pangaia', one historian has said.

That was tricky. I assumed that a "man-made process" was something to specifically benefit man. Never assume... Smile
