Any witness who gives false testimony is to be executed. All of the more serious crimes, in fact, are punishable by death -- even unintentional crimes. For instance, if a man builds a house badly, and it collapses and kills its owner, the builder is to be executed. If the owner's son was killed, then the builder's son is to be killed.

Where would you find these rules?

"If a tavern-keeper (feminine) does not accept corn according to gross weight in payment of drink, but takes money, and the price of the drink is less than that of the corn, she shall be convicted and thrown into the water."
Of course, it has to be a lady bartender!

And I doubt that I would have chosen to be a doctor back then:

"If a physician make a large incision with the operating knife, and kill him, or open a tumor with the operating knife, and cut out the eye, his hands shall be cut off."

That sounds fair to me; I'll try it at the local pub tomorrow.

I think Hammurabi was on to something. We'd probably have less crime and embezzlement if we still went by those oh-so-stringent codes!

Sherasi, you'd really like to live under rules such as these! Ouch! One even says "if someone knocks out another's tooth, then that person has a right to knock out his tooth." ---the beginning of "a tooth for a tooth".

Obviously we can't live by all those rules but certainly I believe that whatever you do to someone else, it should be done to you.

You steal a TV, your TV gets taken away.
You scam people out of money, the exact amount is taken from you.
You do violence against someone, it is done to you.

Crime would virtually disappear if people knew that what they were doing would be done to them.
