Juneteenth is the oldest known known celebration of the ending of slavery. Also called FREEDOM DAY, LIBERATION DAY and EMANCIPATION DAY. The actual date that is being celebrated is June 19, 1865 (TX was a tad late in receiving the news...)
The first state to declare it a state holiday was Texas in 1980 (which was actually the origin of the celebration in Galveston in 1865) and the second to pass it was Florida, in 1991.
